What the heck? This is for Louisiana State University, and these are required fees:

LSU Radio- $5
Performing Arts-$4
Mass Transit- $35
Organizational Relief Fund-$6
LSU TV-$2
Women's Mass Transit-$1
Health Service Fee- $70
Union Fee- $12
Golf-$1.25

Are other schools like this? What if you don't use any of those things? There's no reason to have to pay for them.

Sorry, just trying to find ways to cut my education costs. :D

at my school we have to pay a bunch of weird things like
"assault support" - $1 canadian
"student legal fees" - $1 canadian

all students have to pay $160 canadian (around 110 usd) for mass transit per year, even if you drive. i take the bus though so i save $43 cdn per month. sucks for the driving ppl though.

and i have to pay this $160 cdn "athletics and recreation" fee. i don't even know wtf that is about. i'm sure i don't use that though. but it's required.. oh well

plus a bunch of other stuff

Well, if I have to pay for it, I'm going to use mass transit. :)

When I went to Ole Miss, it was all on scholarship, so I didn't know anything about the fees.

no such fees at my school...the cool thing, we get free mass transit (School ID gets you on the bus for free). To pay for it they jacked up the yearly parking fee from $20/yr to $60/yr. Brilliant move, now if you park on campus there's always parking (before there was usually none after 7:30am. I take the bus, and now the busses are packed...great way to get more cars off the streets and out of the hands of dangerous college kids (girls).

It sounds like colleges are living beyond their means.

"Jacked up" parking to $60 a year? woo-wee. My last parking permit at NCSU was $221/year (and yes, it was a regular student permit). Of course, people here at VT whined when it went up $6 this year to $57. And we have excellent mass transit...... and our moronic Parking Services will sell as many permits as they can find buyers for (with no regard as to how much available parking there actually is).

Anyways... back on topic. MOST state schools have fees like these. Along with athletic fees and the like (all the fees here at VT are roughly $440). I know its annoying.... especially the health service fee (if you have your own insurance), since its the only significant chunk. But the total is only about $137.... over half of which is student health. You could really save ALMOST that much by finding a cheaper source for your textbooks. Compared to the rest of the cost of the education, they're really not all that significant... and, unfortunately, you're going to find them most everywhere.

Most schools have both tuition and fees. That way when you get a full ride scholarship it just covers tuition - you are stuck paying the fees (although any additional scholarship you get will then be applied to the fees). Note that by law, any fee that can support controvercial political views must be refundable. Looking at your fees those would include the LSU Radio and LSU TV. So by law, LSU must have a method of you getting a refund of that $7. The rest you just have to deal with. I've been paying health center, rec center, and student union fees for 8 years now and I've never used any of those facilities. Sure there are some fees I use - registration services, technology, etc. My fees add up to almost $500 a semester now - you are lucky with less than $150.

I think the fees total like $350. The ones I listed are just the strange ones.

Omg, my fees are $1400+, tution is $700+, so I pay over $2100 for GRAD school at Texas Tech, tuition went up 20%, some fees went up 400% from last year, etc. We have fees for everything. I would undestand if I was in undergrad, but grad school, they act like we have time to dink around playing sports, watching sports, etc.

that is brilliant. the busses get more ridership (they're goin' anyway, might as well go full) and more income, the people who are married to their cars have better parking, and the people that really only need a car so they can get to walmart can do without. excellent. they need to do that here.

I tried to not pay my additional fees. The problem with not paying them is that most of them were student passed on voting. Cannot wavier a student fee that won in a vote.
