It wasn't about legitimizing...it was about brand recognition and exposure.

The University of Phoenix is actually a VERY successful company in the sense that they make a lot of money (they are accredited, but I hesitate to call them a real university - I'd suggest community college as the first option, not UoP).

The stadium was built so that the Cardinals wouldn't have to play at the ASU campus stadium anymore. They wanted to get away from the image of the state team being affiliated with a university.

And then they name the new stadium "University of Phoenix Stadium." I've had people ask me if UoP has a football team that plays there

As long as people perceives UofP as crap, then it is crap. Perception is everything in the real world, even though in reality UofP might provide comparable education to community college.

I used to process financial aid for 2 years for students attending the University of Phoenix, and I personally would never waste my money going there. Community colleges generally have a higher standard than UoP, not to mention that the UoP MBA program doesn't even require a GMAT. You can't even get into a 3rd tier college MBA program without a GMAT, so why does UoP set their bar so low?

If you want to do an online program, take it from a reputable traditional university.
