University internet connection

Man, I really hate Kent State. I have been bitching to them for over a year about how horrible their network is.
They give you .7 megabits down and .35 up.

In this day and age where countries are declaring broadband a right, this shoddy a connection for a major research institution is embarrassing. You can't even watch a youtube video without buffering, and forget about more than one website at once.

The worst part is, they have the tech and infrastructure to have a freakin' smoking connection for everyone, but they just throttle it back...

Anyone else have a gimped connection that should be great?

It isn't a matter of helping; they have capped bandwidth for everybody.

Apparently, I am the only one who complains to them. I make sure to send them messages every couple of weeks. It is always some strange response about how they are trying to stop downloading. I think they are just hoarding all the bandwidth themselves and are trying to download all of the porn on the internet.

They are trying to stop downloading. They cut everyone's speed to almost 0. Mission accomplished.

On campus, at Penn State, you have a 4GB/week download limit and a 4GB/week upload limit (used to be 2gb each before last year and 1gb before that), but the speed wasn't nearly as bad. If you went over the limit, you'd get 56k for the rest of the week and if you went over 3 times, 56k for the rest of the year

Now I live off campus, though, and 10mb/sec download and no limits 🙂

At UC Berkeley the speeds were great (in the 100 Mbps range), but we were capped to 5GB of transfer (up+down) per week, which blew. At UCLA, it's just as fast but no caps.

It is a university after all, I'm sure they have better things to use their limited bandwidth for than letting students torrent or download porn. And 700kbps isn't *that* bad.

In a semester or two you'll be able to move out of the dorms and buy whatever speed internet you want.

I'm on campus and I've got 10 Mbps, no cap. I can max out on usenet, no problem. Ping fucking sucks, so online games are pretty much out of the question.

It's bad when your parents have the cheapest available connection and the school can't even deliver that... im paying $1650 for my room it damn better come with a decent internet connection... none of this bullshit where things don't stream at all

Im thinking since im paying for my room/ utilities I can be damn pissed when my connection is shit

I would move off campus if there wasn't scholarships involved. Free money is good.

It isn't only students they are limiting either, so far as I can tell it is universally capped. I especially like it when a prof tries to stream a video for lecture and it takes ages to buffer so we can watch it uninterrupted. I understand it is a university and the demographics say it will be abused, but give us at least a couple of megabits! What's the point of having the tech if you aren't going to use it?
