it's copywrited material, and I've never seen anyone to distribute the shows with the commercials intact.

For normal, publically broadcasted TV shows, I agree with you.

However for TV shows such as on HBO, or HDTV variants, where you normally have to pay extra for such content, it's not stupid at all.

We have received notification from Warner Bros Entertainment that you have
been distributing copyrighted materials via the University of xxxx
computing network.

This distribution is against federal law, the University of xxx's
Policy on Acceptable Use of Electronic Copyrighted Materials, the
Student Code of Conduct, and the ResNet service policy, which you accepted
and agreed to when you registered your User ID and PIN number.

You must stop this distribution immediately and respond to me, Ellen
(contact information below) within two business days. In your written
response, which may be sent electronically, you must
* acknowledge that the industry notification was correct and verify
that distribution of copyrighted materials has ceased -OR-
* demonstrate that notification was unwarranted.

Failure to respond to this notice within two business days will result in
suspension of your network access (that is, your network jack will be turned
off). If your access is disabled, you will need to visit the ResNet office
to sign an official letter of warning before your service will be restored.

Subsequent violations may result in immediate and permanent termination of
network access, referral to Judicial Affairs, and/or referral to appropriate
authorities for criminal or civil prosecution.

I got this last year (freshman). I'd forgotten to move it out of my shared folder. Guess what? They sent me 2 more of these for various other infractions, and all I ever had to do was email them saying "the material has been removed". The universities don't care about this crap, especially not the bandwith when each dorm is behind a T3 backbone. Our engineering center alone has quad OC-48s. The only reason they even sent me these emails is because they need to keep the RIAA/MPAA off their backs.

I got one for filesharing. I just finished downloading the torrent and bam. I looked at the time stamp on the notice my university got and it was close to when the torrnet was finished. All i did was remove the copyrighted material from my system that they specifically mentioned in the notice. Called up the help desk and had my network connecton restored. Done and DONE.

My university frowns on its students doing this kind of thing only if you get caught, other than that they don't care.

Monday the USSC will hand down a decision on whether you you be scared sh!tless.

If they decide in favor of Hollywood the Internet as we know it now will cease to exist.

Ask upperclassmen there, each university's policies and level of enforcement are different.

I have two words for you: SSH tunneling.

And, whatever you do, avoid i2hub. Using it for illegal file sharing is just an invitation to be prosecuted.

EDIT: Oh, and if you ever have to ask, you probably shouldn't be doing it.

go to the local city library - 99.9999999999999% are wireless + internet. they have cd/dvds you can borrow FREE w/just a library card.

your friggin tax dollar is paying for it - use it or lose it :evil:
