Universal Translator Might be Needed to Understand ET

story from Douglas Vakoch, Director of Interstellar Message Composition

Will we ever find a primer for decoding messages from extraterrestrials? Last month, anthropologists who gathered for a major conference in Atlanta, Georgia heard some news that will be sobering for SETI enthusiasts: it may be much more difficult to understand extraterrestrials than many scientists have thought before.

Among the sessions held during December?s annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association was one called "Anthropology, Archaeology, and Interstellar Communication: Science and the Knowledge of Distant Worlds." The session included papers by scholars from such diverse fields as astronomy, archaeology, anthropology, and psychology. Is there a Cosmic Rosetta Stone, they asked, drawing parallels to Earth?s own Rosetta Stone, which provided the key to decoding Egyptian hieroglyphics? Will we ever find a comparable primer for decrypting any messages we might receive some day from extraterrestrials?

Agreed; would kind of suck though to get a message, and spend the next few generations trying to figure out how to say "Hello, we're listening, and greet you in peace" and not "Hello, we're shooting, hope to greet you in pieces." 🙂

I seem to recall an advertisement in a magazine back some years ago that had a picture of a "typical" flying saucer hovering over the ground, with one scientist saying to a military guy that "If they're TCP/IP compliant we can communicate with them."

This was circa 1987 to 1989, LOOONG before the "Independence Day" film/story.

Wish I could find that adverisement again..it'd make a great poster for my wall here in the office. 🙂

SirUlli....you always come up with a Brain teaser. As far as translating......we will ...only after we know that someone is trying to contact us. As for the comedy act............that goes along with skeptics and naysayers.
Mr. Spock would not be impressed. :disgust:

Fortunately, I don't happen to care what a fictional character might or might not think.

But SirUlli does have a penchant for coming up with interesting reads on a regular basis and the above is another great example. 🙂

Well....Mr Smarty...I'll have you know that Mr Spock was preceded by Dr. Spock....... A well known Baby Doctor.....and in no way fictional................:disgust:

So....put that up your network.....MAN 😉😛 😀

Sorry about the jab here, Networkman. And, you are right. We should and usually are skeptical until the theory is suported by fact. But , if you look .....science fiction ....often turns into science fact.

What kind of scientist would think it would be anything but difficult? If not impossible - the differences could be beyond our imagination.

Can you imagine the look on the scientist faces if they spoke English! 😉 , ,it might go something like this

'what the?...... you speak English? ,how'?
'are you kidding? the amount of spurious radio emissions you've been spewing out we learnt all you major languages decades ago!'

😉 (anyone care to carry that on?😛)

Ok, I will. But you'll regret it....

In Soviet Russia, radio emits you!

Anything new about that? (I'm gonna do a quick search on the TPR forum)
