CDs for $10!

welcome to what should of been done like three years ago!!

 

Wholesale prices are $10. That means we'll still be paying $13-$14 at BB/Target. No big whoop.

i think they'd lose more money with people buying just the one hit song off a CD rather than the whole CD

im reffering to downloading it, not actually puting it on media. they can make a profit off of selling me the license for the song

The only place you'll see any real drop will be the overpriced chains (mall stores), and probably not more than a couple of bucks...you think they're going to give up their huge profit margins?

Well, to be exact, the article said $9.09 average wholesale. BB is already running a lot of stuff right at wholesale, even below in some cases, using some CD's as loss leaders -- which a lot of traditional record stores are pissed about since they can't compete with that. You could see titles that went everyday for $14-$15 at Target/Kmart/Walmart/BB/CC go down to $11-$12.

Don't forget internet retailers like DeepDiscount, who operate with tiny margins. The average wholesale cost now is $12 and change, and most of their titles are not more than a dollar over that. With wholesale at $9, retail could be $9.99.

This'll make CD's cheaper if it happens.

And then it'll end up on some file-sharing network anyway... they'd rather have you get the whole cd.

i was thinking about downloading a cd and then mailing about half of the CD's retail cost to the band....not sure how, but they'd be getting 10 times more than what they get from the label

Actually, you're wrong. Most titles will be priced, in-store, at $9.99. A few hot sellers will be in the $11 range.

You think store X will be able to compete when store Y is selling the exact same CD's for 33% less? Someone will ALWAYS pass the savings on in an attempt to increase sales, and competitors inevitably lower their prices as well.

Yeah, I heard $12.99 on the news this morning...but I wasn't really paying attention. I'll still buy used CDs, though.

That the suggested retail cost, like if you went to the rip off known as Virgin Megastore or Sam Goody, etc. However most places(Best Buy, Target, etc etc) sell under the suggested retail price these days. Most CDs should be $10, some $11, very few $12-13. But this is just for Universal artists.

As digitalsm said, that's just the suggested price. As with electronics, CD's "suggested retail" is always higher. For the CD's that this price cut will affect, the MSRP is about $17-$19. Yet you don't see those prices much except for the occasional mall outlet.

There was a much more detailed account of this in today's wall street journal that explained the cuts with more clarity. What I'm posting comes from that.
