United States quits Human Rights Council

Carole Vann/Juan Gasparini/Human Rights Tribune - The news that the US has completely withdrawn from the Human Rights Council spread like wildfire Friday afternoon (June 6) through the corridors of the Palais des Nations in Geneva. There was general consternation amongst diplomats and NGOS. Reached by phone, the American mission in Geneva neither confirmed nor denied the report. Although unofficial, the news comes at a time of long opposition by the Bush administration to the reforms which created the Human Rights Council in June 2006. Washington announced from the beginning that the US would not be an active member but its observer status would mean that it could intervene during the sessions. To date even this has rarely happened.

?We don?t understand the reasons nor the timing of the decision?, said Sebastien Gillioz of Human Rights Watch. ?There have even been some positive signs during this Council. For example Belarus was not re-elected as a member in 2007 nor Sri Lanka this year?.

The stupefaction was made greater by the fact the US actively took part in the universal Periodic Review (UPR) process where 32 countries were scrutinized by their peers in April and May. In particular a series of recommendations were made regarding Romania, Japan, Guatemala, Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine, Indonesia and others.

Diplomats are equally concerned. If the current president of the Council, Doru Costea, declined to comment, his predecessor, Luis Alfonso De Alba said that he didnt see any reason to justify such a decision. Several observers mentioned Washington?s growing discontentment with the influence of the Islamic and African countries in the Council.
I haven't even heard anything about this, and this was 5 days ago. Odd.

Makes sense considering torture is A-OK by this adminstration or something else? Who knows.

The US is the greatest nation in the world and has consistently been the holder of the democracy beacon. I appluad this move as the US should be beholden to none.

Who cares, this council is just as farcical as the one that preceded it (which allowed Libya of all place to Chair it).

😕 Then why were we on it in the first place?

We only had observer status IIRC and even opposed its creation until the rules could be constructed that would keep major abusers off the council.

Well we don't want anything to get in the way of a good old fashioned ethnic cleansing, muzzling of the press, and killing/imprisoning political dissenters.

oops...must have confused us with other nations already on the council

Excellent!

You should use emoticons, however: some people here can't tell when you are joking, and when you are not.

Good. The HRC has turned out to be equally as worthless as the U.N. Human Rights Commission that it replaced. Taking Iran off the list of nations to be closely monitored while passing some twenty-odd condemnations against Israel is the pinnacle of hypocrisy.

When the USA or should I say GWB&co is the greatest abuser of human rights in the entire world, the solution should be obvious, namely for the USA or should I say GWB&co to reform to at least meet minimum standards. Instead, we take the GWB&co stance to remove our self so those standards do not apply. Proving ourself even worse than Libya and Iran.

Its somewhat disappointing that posters like Lupi and Braznor prove themselves to be idiots because they seem oblivious to how low GWB&co can go. GWB may be their President, but I sure lay no claim to GWB or his morally bankrupt enablers.

I hate to break this to you as it may take an inordinate amount of time for you to decipher, but GWB \= US.

LOL! The Human Rights Council has been a complete debacle -- an international joke even -- from its very inception.

I'm glad to see the U.S. get away from their circus bullshit.

What is the point of the Human Rights Council? It is a members-only organization that won't allow a nation to join if it doesn't like its human rights, but it lacks any authority to do anything about human rights violations. Thus, our participation is essentially paying some rich guy a lot of money to sit on the Council and pat other rich guys on the back, all for no real benefit.

The US WAS the greatest nation in the world and USED TO BE the consistent holder of the beacon of democracy.

I deplore this move as further evidence of the tyranny foisted upon the citizens of the United States of America and the world by your Traitor In Chief and his criminal cabal of traitors, murderers, torturers, war criminals and war profiteers.

The US SHOULD BE be second to none in upholding its own principles announced on our hallowed Declaration of Independence and Consitution... until the Bushwhackos demolished that cherished historical legacy and embarrassed our once great nation in the eyes of our own citizens and the world. 🙁

In light of the mountains of evidence against them on the public record, if you're still apologizing for their crimes, either you're dumber than a rock, or you're one of the traitors, murderers, torturers and war criminals, or both.

Which is it?

Responding to the criticism from CycloWizard, the Human Rights Council today announced a change in approach.

It will form a military force dominant enough to overpower any nation in the world, to enforce its condemnations against human-rights offenders.

"Now, it' won't be just words. CycloWizard was right", said Commandant Jones, Human RIghts Council's first Commander in Chief.

Best solution would be for every member of the council to sanction the US for its violations. When reason fails, pull out the stick.

Huh. So we should just cut off heads instead? Would that be ok with you??
