Ok my roommate decided to buy computer parts and have me put them together. I figured I would do it since I would get a 12-pack out of it.

He ordered all the stuff from United Micro(he never asked for my opinion on where to get the stuff at.

He got:
850MHz Thunderbird
Abit KT7
128MB PC133
and so on.

The computer worked fine for about 2 days. Then all the sudden it started randomly rebooting and freezing. I swapped power supplies thinking that was the problem. That didn't fix it and I just happened to have the case apart while running and noticed that the chipset fan was not running at all. I checked the connection. I shutdown the computer and started it back up. The chipset fan would run for about 2 minutes and then die.

I figured that had to be the problem. My roommated RMA'd it back to United Micro. They just installed a new chipset fan and sent it back after testing it for "appoximately 30 minutes". He got it back and same freakin problem. I pulled everything out of the system except cpu, memory, video, and hard drive. It took longer for the problem to occur but it would still freeze or restart. The more hardware I install the quicker it freezes or reboots.

I would test the motherboard and cpu in my system since I have the same setup but he got a combo deal where his warranty is void if the CPU is removed from the motherboard(they have a little sticker on it). I have tried all different components from my system in his to rule out the video card, memory, sound card and network card.

Anyways, United Micro is giving him the run around with this saying it can't be the board because they tested it. BTW they tested it with only a video card, cpu and ram. I can get it to run for 30 minutes with those items if I don't do anything on the computer. If I run quake 2 or any app for that matter it will freeze it is just a matter of time.

What do you suggest doing. He used a check card so he can't dispute it with his credit card company. The tech support people just hang up on him now even though he has been polite the whole time.

This type of crap is just annoying because I have to waste my time putting crap together because United Micro won't just replace the stupid CPU and motherboard.

Two weeks ago, I was all set to order a mobo and Duron combo from United Micro. At the last minute, I checked their resellerrating. It sucked. When the majority of respondents say they wouldn't buy from them again and wouldn't recommend them to friends, you know to stay away! You could try reporting them to the BBB. I think your friend may have learned an expensive lesson.

United Micro
If you returned a product to the company for exchange or refund, did they exchange the product without a big hassle or refund your money without a large restocking fee? 5 yes 17 no

Good luck dealing with this company.

What I think I am going to try to get him to do is return everything to them. Pay the restocking fee and get his stuff somewhere else.
