Wow, I guess they have to make money somehow.

But I don't recall ever having to check a second bag except for international travel, which you're still allowed to check a second bag for free.

I saw this the other day. I've been expecting this for a while. With increased fuel costs and (still) low ticket costs, they're gonna have to increase revenue somewhere. It's expected most of the other carriers will pick this up as well. If they don't, United will drop it as well, or lose ticket sales.

I've also been expecting airlines to crack down on carry-ons as well. Seems like every flight, people are bringing more and more crap on to the plane and trying to stuff it into the overhead bins. When we went to Maui in December, there was a couple whose carry-on bags were as nearly large as our suitcases...like grossly oversized dufflebags. I was astounded that Hawaiian Airlines didn't force them to check them.

I recently flew to New Zealand from NC. I had three layovers each way. No one ever seems to check carry-on weight/size as long as it doesn't look like a regular piece of luggage.

United Airlines is horrible in every respect.
This is just icing on the cake. They charge way too much for poor quality they provide.

I am pretty sure I fit in their "L337 Frequent Flier Program" so I guess I don't have anything to worry about...

Robin Urbanski, a spokeswoman for United, said research found that 1 in every 4 customers checks in a second piece of luggage. "Rather than having everyone offset the cost of extra bags, we are passing the fee to the people who check the extra bag," she said. "That way we keep the fares low for everyone."

Sorry, United. No matter how "low" your fares are, Southwest still beats you by a margin and I've never had problems with them.

I know, look at the service you are getting. You are getting on an jet and it is taking you hundreds and hundreds of miles somewhere in a matter of hours. Yet you can do that and still get a big piece of pizza at Sbarro.
