Wow, lots of good information here. Apparently that interface is also known as an "SGI Open LDI". According to these guys, the connector is a MDR36.

I'm using it as a display for my car computer to serve up MP3s and do GPS navigation. As far as using this as a second display, Windows ME did not like having that vid card and the on-board video in my old compaq enable at the same time. You might have better luck with Win2000/XP and a modern PC with an AGP card. I don't see an reason why it wouldn't work.

That's the idea, yeah.

I'm actually considering it for a "net-station" type thing. Just internet and ms office crapola for the wife. My son gets the 17" trinitron and I get the 15" LCD.

Yeah, I have a SGI 1600SW and figured the connector was very familiar... Checked it out and it did indeed use the OpenLDI/LVDS connector.

Though one thing I'm wondering is if the pinout is really compatible with the OpenLDI spec... I don't think the OpenLDI MDR36 connector provides provisions for power (correct me if I'm wrong).

As for what I plan... Thinking of getting one of those book PCs that'll fit in back of the seat in my car

Don't think you can buy an adapter.... Unless the SGI 1600SW Mutlilink Adapter will work (which I do not want to risk trying).

Prob have to give it power yourself... So, it's either 12vdc (probably) or 5vdc (unlikely). More a matter of figuring out how to get it there...

I doubt any currently available adapers will work. You'd have to make your own. Even if you can get the connectors to match, I doubt there's anything to match the exact pinout.

yeah it would.

Even if the video card would work in XP to use as a second display I think it'd be sweet. Mount the LCD right next to the main monitor and use it as a Winamp display.

The vid card works in AGP+PCI dual display mode... Tried it here in Windows 2000. Won't work with PCI+PCI though. Tried using two of the LCDs (they accidently gave me a second one. ) on the same machine and it results in a hardware conflict.

Okay, for those of us enterprising enough to be willing to attempt to refurbish this thing to work with a card other than the one included, what pins carry the power? I'm a little lost on that one, not really looking at pinouts much. Oh yeah, would it be possible to add more RAM to the card theoretically, given enough solder (sp?) and a lot of patience?

No, the chip itself is designed only to support up to 2MB, adding more, if you're nutty enough, won't do any good.

Yes it is. Tried this in W2K and it worked fine as a second monitor. Just make sure you have your AGP card set as your primary display in the BIOS.

any experience with using this with the $129 Shuttle FV25 from microcenter? I was thinking about using the composite out for ~5" lcd screens and using this monitor with a 10.4" touchscreen I already have as a control unit for it.

I picked one of these up at the reduced price. It'll fit nicely into the spot on my dash I have allocated to my mp3 player. Also, I browsed around the site a bit, and I don't know if anyone is interested, but they have a 101 piece drill accessory set for $9.95 which I also picked up. Looks like it probably has a lot of screw driver bits and such, but I saw at least a few real drill bits in there that back it easily worth it.
