yes i know u cant do it without risking your os, but i thought maybe there is a way to revert back to older one; i had the swedish v8.0 installed when i for some reason installed the 8.1 english beta...:( i have tried reinstalling 8.0 but it still says "beta version has expired".

i guess i am not the one who have done this...

I would strongly advise against it, even if you use a third party utility. In most cases you'll only damage your existing DirectX install and just make it worse.

Reinstalling Windows on top of itself is the best solution. You'll keep all your settings and drivers but system files such as DirectX components will go back to the version that shipped with Windows.

I have directX 8.1 and it has expired.
What is the best way to go back to 80a?

Is there anything special that you have to do when you install Windows 98SE over itself?
Like are there any switches or settings of any kind that are not used in a fresh install?

Nothing special about running Windows setup again. It's no beeg deal and can fix lots of stuff without messin' with your settings too much. Apart from the desktop and virtual memory just about everything will be the same.

But, for the record, removing DX is not such a beeg deal either. Simply extract the version you installed. Generate a file list and make that into a batch file to delete all those files. Delete all the DX entries in the registry and run the batch file from DOS. After rebooting run RegClean or better yet a third party cleaner like Registry Cleaner in Fix-It Utilites. Reinstall the DX version of your choice.

ok guys there IS an easy fix using a 3rd party utility and IT WORKS. I swear it does. At least on 98 and ME. I think it was called directx eradicator... I used it for my dad because he used the 8.1 beta too... windows rebooted fine, with just a simple 'cannot find file' error, and after installing 8.0 and rebooting, everything was perfect.

oh here ya go CLICK ME TO KILL DIRECTX

It works I swear...
