So if I wanted to revert to 10.9.4 from 10.9.5 to test something, how can I do this?

I used to be able to find old point updates online, maybe it was on oldversion.com? Anyway, it's arduous, but you would revert back to a clean install of 10.9, then install the point update that you want.

You'd have to do this outside of Internet Recovery, since that would almost certainly download the latest version.

If I use time machine, will the data files be affected as well? For example will anything saved/created since the backup point be gone after a restore?

How do I get 10.9? Installing it online gets the newest version right?

thanks, never had to do this before.

yes everything will be gone after a time machine restore. it's basically a snapshot of your machine at the point in time you make the backup.

just make a time machine backup of your 10.9.5 build before you do anything, and you can get back to that no problems as long as you have the osx installer that you can boot into.

i'd recomment looking into making a unibeast usb installer, which is used for hackintosh'ing, but it's good just because you have a bootable usb into the osx installer, which allows you to restore time machine backups from there.

i am not sure if you can restore a newer time machine backup on an older version of the installer. like i'm not sure if a time machine backup made of 10.9.5 can be used to restore on the installer for 10.9.4.

Thanks for the replies. I may end up just reinstalling OSX. If I do an in place reinstall of the OS, then the data should stay intact right?

I am having a really strange problem that showed up shortly after the update to 10.9.5 in that Internet browsing seems to not be working now, but ping works, and I have a windows VM which works fine so it seems like something with the network drivers or config is screwed up on the Mac side.

data should stay there no problem. however i'd recommend doing a time machine backup prior just to be on the safe side. it's just nice to know you can always do a full system restore if things get jacked up. i've had to do it multiple times when upgrading versions in the past on a hackintosh.
