Its been more than a year since I had a virus detected on my system, and the last time it was due to a download my wife did;

I unisntalled it and figured how much lighter Windows is without it. I use Firefox to browse through naughty pages.

No need for AV; how many of you have done this as well or simply do not use AV?

I like to have anti-virus installed 'just in case' - to be honest I can't see there being that much of a performance difference unless you use of the Internet Security suites or something

I wouldn't dream of going without AV on a Windows system. Knowing what you're doing isn't a failsafe defense; security holes can get you.

I have anti-virus software installed but never running in the background. When I download something iffy I just right click it and select the scan for viruses option. I have no need for it to be running all the time, waste of resources. Just gotta keep on top of scanning downloads.

I use MailWasher to go through my email so I can deal with any email viruses before they get to Outlook Express.

I can't even imagine using my windows machine without a AV program, and I only go to major websites when I surf the web, and I never download anything odd...

Windows is just not safe, I'd be afraid to have a machine connected to the net without a AV program...

Very tempted to.
I haven't had any viruses, and all the scanner does is slow things (like Firefox download as it scans them).
As long as you are sensible, and also backup BEFORE you uninstall the scanner, and scan at intervals (maybe weekly/monthly checks, without the scanner active all the time), you should be OK, and you can catch any problems.

I'm going to copy my Windows install to another partition, then stop my virus scanner.

I am considering having BitDefender 7.2 Free Edition again... no active scan, but scaning programed at 4:00 a.m. every day.

I love it when people post in a thread just to talk about someones post count, it contributes greatly.

They may... but it really doesn't matter much. HijackThis can show me when something is wrecked. I rarelly visit pages I don't know, and can immediately tell if a page has some spooky script or something... or at least suspect.

Not being infected over a year must be of some insurance, ne?

I use anti-virus on my Windows machine. It doesn't take up any real resources, and if I thought it was slowing things down too much I'd get better hardware. I run as a limited user and use mozilla where appropriate. I don't download a bunch of junk, and 99% of the software I use is F/OSS (including my anti-virus). Going without anti-virus is just stupid.

Fixed :D

Errrr... no. If you have a rootkit hiding stuff from your antivirus scanner, it can hide it from HJT too.

Out of curiosity, what class is your regular user account, is it Computer Administrator or is it Limited?

Admin, obviously.

It has been of my experience that BD8 detects almost anything I've thrown to it. I've also tested PC-Cillin, Norton, McAfee and Kaspersky and somehow its BD that's always gotten me out of trouble.

And correct me if I am mistaken, but I thought HJT only scanned the whole registry looking for entrys where virus normaly located in; not precisely meant to "search and destroy" virus or malware. Also, every now and then I check my system's services, see if there is one that shouldn't be there or that looks a tad wicked.

It's not obvious. Most of the intelligent people I know use limited user accounts.

And what do you do when there is a rootkit installed that cloaks the evil services?

I do notice some slow-downs, specially when launching apps, and I highly doubt my hardware has anything to do with such behavior. But, then again, its also stupid to use an AV if you know the propper use of the internet (such as what pages you surf, the mail servers you should use, and the places you download stuff from), don't you think?

Anyways, it is true it doesn't hurt to have an AV, so I installed BD 7.2FE and programed it to do scheduled scans on my hard drive.

No. I don't think that it's stupid to ever run AV. What an silly question. There are no "safe sites" out there.
