unidentified network and Vista

local network [belkin] and internet working fine, at next reboot local network [unindentified] is shown and no internet.

How can i get vista to connect to router at every boot ?

what i have, my pc [vista] > router > dsl modem, my other pc which is an xp machine connects anytime

its a wired router to pc with a wired modem, the wireless laptops [xp] connect without problems

There are a few "solutions" found by googling your question. I have tried a few of them without any certain success. Google> vista unidentified network

Best bet is to be patient for about 2 minutes and then try to "repair" the connection. It is annoying and happens to quite a number of people. Alot of blame is being thrown at IPv6 and routers.

In my case I run an AD domain with DHCP on a 2008 Server. I am going to reinstall DHCP on a 2003 Server and see if it helps.

MedicBob thanks for the reply, i wasnt aware others were having the reconnect prob, i can get reconnected but at reboot i have to reconnect again, if its a router prob OR a vista prob then ill try to be patient.

are there any IPv6 routers avail that will fix the issue ? anyone.

I've never heard of a wired connection showing "unidentified network". Must be some new issue with Vista. With XP, load NIC drivers, plug in cable, and it just works.

what seamed to fix the problem for me, i updated the firmware [was beta], i downloaded the latest software for my belkin router and ran it with admin priv, it rebooted the pc and continued in what seamed to be offline mode [not at windows], at the welcome screen i choose my account, vista loaded the the network and made the connection to my router, 5 reboots and all seems well.

turned out my router settings were incorrect for vista, had to set the router up in switch mode, Great !!!!!!!!

Does this have anything to do with the windows DHCP bug that they refuse to fix? The use of the broadcast flag in the DHCP request?

Try using a static IP and manually putting in gateway and DNS servers. If so it's not the routers fault, it's vista. There's also a registry fix for this.

i dont know if it has anything to do with a DHCP vista bug, or The use of the broadcast flag in the DHCP request !

i do know that pc had xp pro sp3 with all updates, my other box had xp pro with sp3 but not fully updated, the box started having network problems, so i just loaded it with vista and sp1, the problem percisted with vista, M$ is doing something with security protocols, i dont know what.

i am not even close to a network engineer, the ones that come here avoid these threads like the plague, something IS going on imo, as far as messing with the DHCP/DNS i cant go down that road, i simply donot know enough to get myself out trouble, hense why i came here, i do know someone that can come here and fixit though.

I tried that fix. My situation is/was a bit differant. Server 2008 DHCP = No IP 50% of the time and with Server 2003 DHCP = no problems.

There is alot of speculation on the Broadcast Flag being the main problem. I feel M$ is using it to cover themselves due to another flaw. If I got rid of anything that COULD server IPv6, Vista worked great. Serving anything with IPv6 hosed it though.

Network and Sharing Center. On the left should be manage network connections. Right click, properties the one you want. Click TCP/IPv4, then properties. Set your static IPs there.

thanks Medicbob, i had already tried the second one and it didnt seem to fix the prob.

got a network guy coming at 2pm today, says he can fix the problem, correct the issues with the router and vista, setup security on the router, and still able to use all pc's and laptops, will update.

a combo of cheap cat 5 cables along with what seemed to be a corrupt router firmware that apparently didnot issue an ip address quick enough to suit vista so vista assigned its own and therefore vista would state 'unidentified network', a reflash of the firmware and some better cat5e cables and several reboots to confirm the prob is solved, to be on the safe side i gona replace the router and look for some high quality cables, thanks everyone, now i gona go kick myself in the but !

One cannot use PC troubleshooting methods for networking. Rebooting things willy nilly only makes it worse.
