Uniden Wireless not Interneting (PLZ HELP A n00b!)

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! Upgraded firmware to 1.08 and that did the trick!!!!!!!!!

I got in on the outpost.com offer for a wireless card +router from Uniden. I get "excellent" connectivity, and I can access my router's setup wirelessly. What I CANT seem to do is use the wireless network for internet surfing. These are the specifics:

I have a Hawking router connected to the DSL modem -- no problems there, internet works fine. I connected the Uniden router to one of the free ports on the Hawking, to give me wireless service. Shouldnt it simply access the internet that way? There is no logging in, or anything special that one needs to do to get internet from my hawking router, besides just physically connecting to it.

Now, just to make sure, I plugged the DSL line directly into the Uniden, and configured the PPPoE settings. SURPRISE: still doesn't let me surf the net wirelessly.

Suggestions?

Oh and my laptop (the one with the wireless card) is running XP pro.

Check that your laptop is getting an IP address from the wireless router.

Check that your wireless router is not trying to use the same IP address as the wired router.

Check that you have dns resulution service (put in the ip address of someone like www.cisco.com and see if the page appears).

Yep. And when i connect my desktop to the Uniden router with an ethernet cable, I can ping the laptop from my computer. By the way, I can't get internet with an ethernet connection to the Uniden router either.

What do you mean? Both have a local IP of 192.168.1.1 by default. However, I can see from the system information screen that my Uniden successfully obtained its external IP from my wired router (192.168.1.21 -- the first available IP address as assigned by the wired router whose internet works).

How do I get their IP address, so that I can try this?

Are your routers getting IP's from the DSL PPoE Configuration?

IF so, then your DNS is msiconfigured. DNS, or Domain Names resolution allows you to enter names which are resoleved by public DNS servers to certain IP addresses.

Google.com for example, is resolved as 216.239.41.99

Type http:// 216.239.41.99 , and tell me if google shows up. If it doesn't show up, DNS is not the problem.

If it DOES show up, You need to add the DNS server IP addresses to your rotuer's configuration. You can get those from Verizon.

AHHH!!! THIS IS FRUSTRATING!!! And the Uniden is UPnP compliant too, something I need for my Civilization 3 online gaming.... It connects fine, just doesnt transmit the internet!!

The reason I know this is not a client problem: I took the PC that I am typing this on now, that works fine on the internet through my wired router, and plugged it into the Uniden. It didn't connect to the internet there.

!. Unplug EVERYTHING..INCLUDING THE MODEM FOR 5 minutes.
!!. Plug in the Modem. Make sure all the lights turn on.
!!!. Plug in the Router, and connect it to the modem.
!!!. Set your main, under TCP/IP properties in network connections, to DHCP, and to recieve DNS from the server.
!!!!. Plug it in to the rotuer.
!!!!. After you get an IP address, connect to the router. (no more than 15-20 seconds)
!!!!!. Check the PPPoE settings, and connect if it has not already done so on its own.
!!!!!!. Go to start, RUN, and type " ping 216.239.41.99" . tell us if you get a response.
!!!!!!!. type " ping www.google.com" . tell us if you get a response.

Here's my setup for clarity:


DSL MODEM =====> Hawking Router (all computers connected to it use the internet fine) ====> Uniden wireless 4 port router (no internet via wireless OR via ethernet using same computers as above), but assigns IP address. I know the IP is Unidens because my IP addresses on the Hawking start at .21 and up, but the laptop that I connected to the uniden has an ip of 11 (the setting on the Uniden).

therefore, PPPoE settings, and everything verizon-related works. Something goes wrong when I connect the Uniden to one of the ports on my Hawking. The Uniden DOES obtain the external IP assigned by the Hawking (192.168.1.21), but doesn't seem to relay the web access.

Just changed my Uniden router internal ip to 192.168.1.2 to make sure it doesnt conflict with the internal IP of my Hawking (192.168.1.1), no change. Tried to configure DNS manually (entered Hawking IP) -- didn't work either. Running out of ideas;(

I just noticed something weird...

In uniden system info: It says the external IP is 192.168.1.22 -- thats what the Hawking would probably assign it.

BUT

On my PC that is also connected to the Hawking, I CANNOT PING 192.168.1.22 (the Uniden)!!!! Could that be a clue to my problem????

Routers behind routers on a simple netowork is a NO NO!!!!


Like I said, disregard the Hawing, and JUST try the Uniden.

Well I tried reconnecting the Uniden to the DSL router, but when I started configuring PPPoE it wouldnt save, complaining that the firmware is wrong for this. What I will do, to save myself time is this:

Since this router is intended for my parents house, where there is no PPPoE setup, i'll go ahead and try to hook it up there. If it works -- FINE. If not, then I'll need more tech support.

Whats surprising is that LAST NIGHT I was able to save PPPoE settings. But tonight I cannot Oh well, let it stay a mystery for now, unless at my folks place it doesnt work.

Update on my progress:

I decided to try and connect to Uniden from my parents cable modem, since it doesn't require PPPoE setup.

This is what I found:

1) Router configuration can only be accessed wirelessly. When I connect by ethernet cable, any attempt to change configuration or even reboot the router results in the following error message:
Wrong version of firmware for DR-E604 Broadband Router(H/W Version Error)

2) Fine, I configure the router wirelessly. I set the WAN to DHCP/auto. Connect to the cable modem. Do reboot. The cable modem indicators show connection as successful. The router's external IP address however remains 0.0.0.0 in the system status screen. Obviously, no internet....

Ideas?

Tried something else:

I allowed my PC to connect to the Cable modem directly, in order to obtain network info from RCN DHCP server. I copied that info into the router as a static configuration, and connected the router to the cable modem, spoofing my PC's NIC MAC address. No good, no internet. Cable modem still has the 3 LED's green -- meaning everything is detected as "good".

Argh!

I know, its always the dumbest thing that ends up causing all the havoc.... Dumbest in hindsight of course, since I had never had to upgrade the firmware for ANYTHING that I own (mobos, wired routers...)

FYI, Uniden's v1.08 has some problems of it's own, apparently you can't ping local nodes on your LAN with it.
