Unformatted slave drive: Should XP detect this automatically??

You should see the drive in Disk Management. You can create a partition and format it there.

Right click on My Computer, select Manage. On the bottom left you should see Disk Management. Click on that, and on the right section you should see a list of your logical and physical drives. Right-click on the one that says something like "Disk 1, partition - unknown" or whatever, and select "Format". Format it as NTFS.
