Unexplained crippling slowdown

I'm having a trouble with my windows laptop, which I have had for about 2 1/2 years now. I can boot into windows without much of a problem, and it seems to be able to run a few apps ok. But when I open my thunderbird email client or certain other apps, including the add/remove programs menu from the control panel, my system slows down to the point of basically not functioning.

It's not a complete freeze, as my mouse cursor still functions and I can try to select icons and such, but if anything loads at all, it takes several minutes minimum.

Can anybody conclude from this info whether the problem is software or hardware? I wondered right away if it was a virus, but I can't run my McAfee virus scan without the lockup, and an internet-based scan resulted in the same problem. Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

you should take a look at the consolidated security thread:

There are ways to remove spyware or virii w/o booting into windows, such as with Bart PE (google that) with plugins or with a bootable linux cd, which is probably mentioned in that link i gave.

FYI, using a bootable linux cd can help you narrow down whether or not it is a hardware or software issue. If it don't slow down so much in the bootable cd, you've likely got yourself a software issue. Examples of such cd's are ubuntu for modern hardware or xubuntu for older hardware (maybe 2001 and before)
