Some small percentage of state taxes probably go towards the administration costs of the program, but the benefits are indeed paid out of the funds employers pay into.

Don't worry OP, you are retarded and you should file now. The state website should have all the information on retro pay etc. and what you need to do to verify searching for employment etc. Your employer paid for the unemployment insurance as part of hiring you, so you're not a freeloader, only if you exceed the 6 months and start taking Federal unemployment are you a freeloader.

Not necessarily. There are only a few states where the employee actually pays UI. In MOST states, it's 100% employer paid.

FuckinA, in MOST states, the first week after you file is a "waiting week" for which you will NOT get paid...file as soon as possible after getting laid off.

I honestly don't care enough. If it is true your employer pays into it, and you helped that employer earn a profit, then I don't see why you're not entitled to it.

California employees pay SDI, (state disability insurance) not UI. UI is 100% employer paid. IIRC, NJ, PA, and maybe one other state still require a small employee contribution to the UI program. Washington state employees USED TO pay into UI, but that apparently changed since I was here last. All other states require the employer to pay 100% of the UI premiums.

It's kind of a silly point to make one way or the other. Company profit and other overhead expenses aren't deducted on the employee's pay check but the employee certainly "pays" them with the value created by their labor. Or is it the customer who pays for it all with their labor?

I think it depends on the state, but in Michigan, you do not get back pay, unless you can show a good reason as to why you couldn't file on time. Death in the family was one, I don't remember the others.

My wife was laid off on a Monday, she thought she had to wait until the following week (when not working at all) to file. She didn't get paid for that first week. No biggie, you still get all your weeks if you remain unemployed long enough.

Should I go ahead and file? I'm running out of money here, and sure could use that last month of pay. I'm thinking of going to old boss and updating him on the situation and HOPING that he will see reason in my request...I dunno...just looking for any helpful advice anyone can offer, I guess. I've never used unemployment and don't know how they see the fact that you have prospects.

Once again, not all states require the employee to actually pay into the system. Only 2 or 3 states do that. The rest of the states are 100% employer funded. IMO, the employee DOES pay into it...as part of their overall compensation package...but it's not an actual payroll deduction shown on the paycheck.
