Take it but if you get severance pay, you won't be able to get unemployment until that runs out. So if they gave you 8 weeks severance pay, you have 8 weeks before you can get it. Might vary by state but that's one of the questions here in WI.

But remember you'll have to pay extra in taxes at the end of the year because unemployment compensation isn't taxed when you get it, it's taxed at tax time.

Unless they have changed it in the last 5 years in WI you can choose to have the taxes taken out of the unemployment check instead of waiting till the end of the year.

You've probably payed thousands in Employment Insurance or something of the like, so why not collect? Not like you're exploiting anything... No reason to make it harder than it already is.

Some of you already know that I was recently laid off. I twas a terrible situation that I was let go and I was given severance pay. For some odd reason I feel bad taking out Unemployment. People make it seem like it's a bad thing to take unemployment. I was researching it and it doesn't seem so bad. Here in Texas the employer pays for Unemployment Insurance so its not like tax payers are fitting the bill.

My question is how do people of AT feel? Should I take out the unemployment and start finding a job, or should I pitch some pennies HARDCORE and find a new job without the unemployment?

I need income so I am leaning toward taking the unemployment....but it seems like sometimes society looks down on people who take out unemployment.

Who makes it seem like a bad thing? Those people are fscking morons and you shouldn't listen to them.

Take the unemployment. It will help you keep your head above water while you find a new job. Which is what it's there for in the first place.

Of course you should take the unemployment and you should not feel bad about it either.

Unemployment is INSURANCE, not the dole. You paid into it while you were employed for exactly this reason. I really don't know why so many people confuse it for welfare or similar like that. Would these same people not file a claim with their auto insurance if they got in an accident?

I was "forced to resign" a while back. I signed up for Unemployment, qualified, and took my unemployment pay toured Australia for a month. Given i had gone some interviews during the time that i was given a job offer before i left for Australia. But even if i hadn't i would still have gone.

Your previous employer paid for it; they laid you of, might as well get a little more out of them before you move on. But thats just me.

You shouldn't have posted that part about Australia. Even though you already had a job offer before leaving, you technically did not qualify to receive your claim benefits while you were out of your work area and unavailable to work. You had a valid claim otherwise, it sounds like, but just not during those weeks you were out of the country.

The "unemployment pay" that i took to Australia was from the previous three months that i was unemployed. My basic expenses were so low at that point that my unemployment covered basic expenses plus a significant more.

In PA, you qualify for $500/bi-wk or 40% of your regular pay, which ever is LOWER. My expenses were almost non-exist that the $500/bi-wk for three months paid for my entire month long trip, given i had to dip a bit into savings also. I never actually filed for benefits for the weeks that I was in Australia, even though my claim was still "open".

But overall, i came out of my 5-month unempolyment period with a month long vacation in Australia and my savings (almost) intact thanks to Unemployment benefits. Not many can say that they time they were unemployed was a great time in their life, but made it work.

OP, file for it, let the agency decide if you qualify, and IF you can enjoy it for a bit, then try to get a job.

Thanks for voting and giving opinions. I'm leaving this moment to go to the Texas Workforce Office and then to a recruiter to help me get into a job with the same pay I was getting before.
