12/31/10 The wife will be unemployed from her government day job. Her benefits person met with her to go over her insurance, savings plan etc. He said,"You need to search which state pays the most in unemployment and file there. The state passes the bill to the fed so they don't care." Huh? Anyone know about this?

Massachusetts pays $628-942/week compared to S.C. $326. Talk about incentive to ride the system.

To keep the current insurance plan, it'll be $1200/mo.

As far as I know you file unemployment whereever you pay taxs.

Who did she work for? And what job?

That benefits person sounds like they have some really great ethics. Glad he's not working for the government...oh wait.

lol.

She won't take advantage because she's got a good work ethic. Probably start a new job 1/2/11.

Field rep for Gresham Barrett, U.S. Rep. S.C.

That's what I thought, too.

Since technically her place of employment is DC there may be a loophole here. If it's legit then by all means take advantage of it. That was your money to begin with, you're just getting the most back.

Just got off the phone with her. 2 different benefits guys said this. The House of Reps isn't linked to any state.

Yep. Now go get your money. Shop around the really high cost of living states and find the one that pays the most.

No loophole.

I worked in DC but lived in VA. As such I pay VA taxs and would be covered by VA's unemployment etc...
Unless she had a place in DC and filed her taxs/residance there she is covered by SC.

We'll definitely find out for sure. Don't want to get a garnishment for overpayment.

The Max is for a single person is $625 in MA but you get an additional $25 for each child. It's something like 50% of your avg earning for the last six months of employment with a max of $625. If you think $18k is a lot when you've been making $36k+, it's not.

That's 12.5 kids to get to the $942. Who the heck has 12 kids? Not to mention the other .5 kid.

Per your edit: Making $625/wk in S.C. is a decent deal except for the insurance loss.

I don't think that's true. I have a buddy who lives in VA and worked in DC that was layed off and had to go to DC unemployment for his benefits.

It goes by the state you worked in, not lived in. For instance, I live in NJ and worked for Verizon in NYC .. When we had strikes, we filed for unemployment in New York (thankfully there was an office in Rockland county, so easy to get to from where I lived)

If you've got two benefits people telling her this then run with it and get the money. It's a lot harder for them to take it from you once it's in your hands than it would be to change it to get more. You file in the place you work, not the place you live. Since DC isn't a state I can see where they get to just choose whatever pool they want.

Even if she was working in SC here actual place of employment is probably listed as DC. It's congress for christs sake, they MAKE the laws that give them special treatment. I wouldn't be surprised at all if what the benefits folks are telling her are true. Not surprised at all. That's your money, go get it.

Can you still get the COBRA premium reduction? I was able to get that when I was unemployed back in Jan 09. I only had to pay 35% of the insurance costs and that lasted 9 months i think.

I don't know but that's a great idea. I'll check on it.

I was on unemployment last year, for about 3 months. I was making $305/wk AFTER taxes. I got a job, and started making less! It sucked, I should have just stayed on, I had plenty of money left in unemployment.

A lot of people in S.C. in that same boat. By the time they pay daycare, transportation expenses, etc. it's better to stay home.

Yeah, its the same up here more or less. I figure it works like that everywhere. I know a lot of people are just not having any luck finding a job...but I have to imagine that since most people don't like working and unemployment benefits keep getting extended that there is a subset of the unemployed that are just making the logical decision to not work.
