Yea, I have no expectations of getting rich. I wouldn't be getting rich surveying either, and the thought of doing it for 30 more years makes me cry :^(

Now isn't the best time to get in the civil engineering field, at least in my part of MD. It's just a short downturn though, and you should have no problems hooking up with a job in the next year or so. Definitely try getting some survey experience. I think it's a huge help to see how things work in the "real world", as opposed to just seeing things on a piece of paper. Some of the designs I've seen, I have to wonder wth the engineer was thinking :^D
