i have a problem, initially i setup my hard drive for external use, ie external usb. then i recently decided to put it in to my system for internal use. i splited my hard drive into 3 different sections. now when i attached the hard drive using sata on my mb it can only detect 2 of the 3. for some reason it can't detect the third hard drive. on the other two is just movies and some files and on the last drive which cannot be detected are programs which i installed. can someone help me out?

Double check all cables and connections. You may even want to try a different SATA cable.

I doubt it'd be a loose connection or bad cable, seeing as how 2 partitions are being fully read and not giving problems, a cable wouldn't determine whether or not to show an entire partition. Since this is the partition with his OS and apps installed, I'd say it's more software ended. Maybe the OS you're using right now refuses to read a partition with another OS on it? Mayhaps a framework discrepancy?

the problem is that previously when the hard drive was external it was using the same OS as when i changed it to internal. same pc as well. the error is something to do with I/O but not sure how to fix it.

Assuming that you are running Windows of some sort, check the Disk Managment screen and see what it says about that hard drive and its partitions.

Sounds like the partition is messed up, I would suggest running something like pc inspector or another partition recovery tool if that data is important to you

Personally I'd back all the data up with it hooked up externally and then recreate the partitions and move the data back with it hooked up internally.

Get Data Back is a good program for Data recovery. Gnome Partition Editor is a great program to work with partitions. The first isn't free and the second is. Gnome I have used to set up partitions only so I am not sure of all the capabilities of the program but its free to try.

To quote Microsoft: "A raw partition is a partition on your hard disk that is not formatted and that does not have a drive letter assigned to it."

As to why......
Well, the partition information on the drive is messed up. But I can't tell you why. As noted, the safest thing would be to make backups of anything important on the drive that you can still access. At that point, you can try the various data recovery or partition recovery programs available. Microsoft has the "MBRFIX" program available in the XP Recovery Console available when booting from an XP Install CD.
