I don't know. FTL got a ton of good reviews and plenty of talk as well. I sort of felt it was over appreciated lol.

That's the problem with reviews,I'm asking you guys what you think are unknown or underrated games,no right or wrong in this thread btw.

I'll throw another one out.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. I bought the game at least a year ago for $5 but never actually spent more than five minutes in the game. I started playing for real a couple of weeks ago and I am really enjoying it. In fact, I spent twice what I paid for the game for some DLC already. Maybe that was EA's sinister scheme.

Kerbal Space Program
Prison Architect
FTL
SPAZ - 2D spiritual successor to Star Control imo
Defender's Quest - fantasy tower defense
Don't Starve
Kings Bounty Crossworlds - you should try this if you like fantasy strategy
Mark of the Ninja - by same devs as Don't Starve
Recettear - not the best, but very unique and cheap. Capitalism Ho!
Spectromancer - card game like MtG; very challenging on high difficulties
Starpoint Gemini 2 - best imo out of all the space games (X, etc)
Toy Soldiers - not many PC only players know of this; great tower defense game

I'm also playing it now (started 4 or 5 days ago) but my impression is different. I like the art style and the music, but whoever was in charge of decision making for this game killed it.

- It's like the designer thought 'loot is good! Let's put loot everywhere!', and I mean everywhere! walk around, check under some stones... "Sword of Awesomeness!". Go to the dungeon, chest outside, open it... "Longbow of Coolness!". Enter dungeon, chest right inside, open it... "Sword of Destructionness!". Kill a worm, he drops "Hammer of Injustice!". Seriously, I have about 50 empty inventory slots and I have to go to shop after every dungeon as it's always full of magic items when I leave, which totally kills the joy of finding magic items in the first place.

- I can see how the company went bankrupt, almost every NPC (like at least 20 per town and there are many towns) has a full list of topics that are all spoken. I can't imagine how much they spent on voice acting alone (especially bad for localization in other languages). Lost on me as I just read the text and skip the voice.

- The game is not challenging at all, at least so far (I'm level 17 now). I don't remember if I selected a difficulty at the start, if I did I selected medium, but if this is medium I can't think of what 'easy' would be.

I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game, but I can see how it failed to recover whatever was spent on it. Seems to me that many bad decisions were made making this game.

Agree with you here. FTL got tons of press and attention. For sure a very good game but probably overrated.

Gratuitous Space Battles

Not exactly "underrated", but probably closer to "Forgotten" (and maybe "Unknown") than anything else. I've re-installed it a couple of weeks ago, and played it again for a few sessions (about 3 hours each, or so) and I still enjoy that game a lot.

Essentially, if you don't mind 2D (stylish, that is, well-polished and detailed visuals), like Sci-Fi, like space ships and armadas firing at each others, like watching ships blow up, like seeing each individual laser batteries in action, like to control your fleet (pre-battle), like to muster up tactics and build your own ships (and upgrade parts), then I yeah I'd say that GSB is the game for you. Also, there is a "semi-online" mode which allows you to download community-made fleets to compete against.

Side note, there's basically no story, it's just for the action, don't buy GSB thinking you're in for a best-seller level story line with intricate twists and turn of events that you can't possibly see coming. You buy GSB to blow things up in a Sci-Fi setting (and it's doing just that very well).

The only possible turn off I can think of is the fact that it isn't a 3D game (2D really isn't for everyone).

Talisman Digital Edition. http://store.steampowered.com/app/247000/

I used to play the boardgame version of this with some friends years back. Like any board game that takes hours and hours to play, it's nearly impossible to get a group of people together long enough to play games like this anymore it seems, so when I stumbled across this I had to give it a shot.

I think it was worth the cost. It's fun to play. It's kind of like playing a single player version of Monopoly or something against AI, but it's fantasy, with magic and combat, with a good amount of strategy, character classes, equipment, spells, money, stealing, luck... I guess it depends if you like board games and if you would like to play a board game adapted as a computer game.

I can't really disagree with your points. The game is flawed for sure. I bumped up the difficulty pretty early because the game was just too easy. Once you get really leveled up, I think the game is somewhat easy in any case which is too bad. The loot is crazy. I don't mind too much because I have bought some backpack upgrades and I also salvage a ton of equipment for crafting.

I think I keep playing because the combat is just so much fun. It is really a fluid and fun combat system, and it plays like a dream with a controller. I'm not sure it will hold my interest all the way to the end, but for now it is just good monster killing action.

I just picked up Sins of a Solar Empire again. I know a couple friends who have it, but I never see it get talked about...short of the re-release of Homeworld (which hopefully is amazing) I can't think of any amazing space RTSes that are REALLY good (at least, none since the original Homeworld.)

Jesus, so many space lovers, with mentions of FTL, SPAZ, Star Control 2, Gratuitous Space Battles (I LOVE all these games!!)... I guess true hardware enthusiasts are also sci-fi geeks. I am one of you. ;)

Deus Ex Human Revolution Directors Cut.

Bought it late 2013 during black Friday/end of November sales. I thought nothing of it besides a quick look at an Angry Joe video. At first didn't find the game spectacular in any way...
...BUT after about an hour was surprised, after two hours I was thinking "is this game really that good", after ten I was amazed and kept on being more amazed. I've played it through multiple times and enjoyed every minute of it.

I'd never even heard of the game(the original or HR) until that sale, and now its a bar(imo)that no other game has ever come close to. Give it a few hours, at first it seems weird with the controls, and style...but its really quite different/nice/refreshing compared to what it seems like it would be. I can't say enough(I always drop the Deus Ex HR hoping others will give it a sporting chance..)

On top of the game being great, there is an optional commentary that you can turn on that will play randomly throughout the game which is quite nice. It has a lot of information about the game, the game making process, how it works. You can tell the people that made the game brought a lot of passion to the project.

Its very often on sale for $5. Its worth every penny(and more).

You must have been living under a rock. :p You want to play the original Deus Ex as well, which is still considered one of the best games of all time.

I got the director's cut version a while ago and have been meaning to do a second playthrough with it, but it apparently introduces several bugs over the original game. Although it might still be preferable for the commentary and the fact that it combines the original HR and its DLC into a single game.

Since someone already mentioned UQM/Star Control II, I'll nominate Master of Magic

hahaha... I remember playing that when it originally came out.

Now if only they would remake Star Flight 1 and 2... Well, I guess these would need some kind of random map generator, as the fun in those games was actually doing the exploration. Now with the internet, the answers would just be everywhere...

MetalGear Rising. I think the game got kinda shoveled off to the side because of the gameplay using the MetalGear name.

Thief 3. Not much love for what I consider to be the best in the series.
