Ronin was also a rare movie that featured Jean Reno and wasn't terrible. I like Jean Reno, but aside from Leon, he's been in some awful stuff. Rollerball comes to mind ... *shudder*.

Lol, don't forget the Matthew Broderick Godzilla remake. 😀

Ooo I got a couple to bookend each other :

The Right Stuff, with a terrific ensemble including a straight-arrow hero Ed Harris.

Just Cause, with a truly terrifying performance as a psychopath by Ed Harris.

I guess The Right Stuff is underrated now, but it was quite popular back in the day. You never see it mentioned nowadays. Both added for Ed Harrisey goodness.

I have to mention Ronin. It did poorly in the box office and has a 7.x rating on IMDB which IMO is underrated. It's one of my favorite movies with some great action scenes, car chases, and a convoluted but interesting plot.

Great movie. Added.

Ooo I have another one!

The Nines

Very bizarre, but alternately funny and tragic. A standout performance by Ryan Reynolds of all people. Highly recommended!

Ryan Reynolds eh, hmmm, still it looks pretty interesting, I'll have to check it out.

There are a bunch in the thread that I have really liked and a couple that I thought were horrible.

First, I'll suit up and get ready to be beat down....

Dark City was one of the worst movies that I have ever seen. It was the only movie to date that I have ever walked out on. The only other movie that I would have done that to was Vanilla Sky if I hadn't been there with a girlfriend who seemed to be enjoying it.

Now for some that I have liked.....

I have liked most of the stupid comedies that have been listed and some of the others:

Zoolander
Grandma's Boy
Beerfest
Black Hawk Down

Some dramas, suspense, romantic/dark comedies that haven't been listed that I enjoyed:

High Fidelity (Jack Black was great and the chick was pretty hot)
Heat (not sure if it is technically under-rated or not...but the shoot out scene after the bank robbery is one of the best scenes in any movie ever)
Enemy at the Gates
Liberty Stand Still (Wesley Snipes was great in this)
Labrynth (Special effects were cutting edge and Bowie was awsome)

event horizon was great imo, the only cheesy part was the guy on fire. Otherwise I thought all the real girls was like a 9.5 for me and its usually rated 6 or so, just a good movie about relationships.

Oooohhhh, I like Zooey Deschanel! Added.

Heat is definitely not underrated, but it is an absolute classic. I've seen all of the others except Liberty Stands Still. High Fidelity is great and I've always meant to read the book to see how they compare; thanks for reminding me, I'm going to go pick it up.

Added all except Heat.

Ah, how could I forget the evil fun that is 'Demon Knight', with an insane bald Billy Zane, complete with perfect usage of Filter's 'Hey Man Nice Shot'. Guilty pleasure FTW 😀

I would say Munich is definitely underrated.

I'm not so sure I would agree. I liked the movie quite a bit, but it made over $130 million worldwide and seemed to be quite highly regarded and was nominated for best picture and director; not sure I can say it is underrated.

Err, Black Hawk Down is not underrated. It is well rated and appropriately so. Ditto Heat. Ditto Ronin. Ditto 12 Monkeys. Ditto The Game and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, even if they are less known.

World's Fastest Indian is overrated. I lurv Sir Anthony and it's all well done and everything but it is essentially just an old man character muddling around for a couple hours (overcoming the odds schtick doesn't do much for me). Not exactly entertaining and I don't mind slow drama.

So yeah, I reckon a lot of folks are missing the point of the topic. Not popular does not equal underrated. Indeed, popular often equals overrated. Just look at some of the shite on imdb's top 100: Lord of the Rings trilogy in the top 10? Laughable.

The Mosquito Coast is one of the few mentioned recently which is truly underrated. Another which comes to mind (indubitably due to like setting) is The Emerald Forest.

I propose axing any title from the list which is rated 7 or more at imdb.

I've never even heard of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and I watch a lot of movies; guess I just missed that somehow.

Underrated to me just means not talked about that much, even if at one time it was very popular (see my comments on The Right Stuff a few posts back). With that said, I do agree with you in general, so maybe I will add the ratings and split these into two categories or something.

Good man!

I submit Breakdown may be slightly underrated too (certainly relative to much higher rated tripe).

Glad to see someone else that knows Freeway. Man that movie cracks me up.
