Oh man, I could make pages and pages, but here are some:

Mogwai --- best band EVER

Modest Mouse - Their old stuff, not the new cd. Everyone is a Modest Mouse fan now, but not many people have heard anything other than Good News which is a shame. Also check out his little known side band Ugly Casanova

Dntel
The Postal Service
Air
Built to Spill
Carissa's Wierd
Low
Yo La Tengo
Red House Painters
Explosions in the Sky
Four Tet
Lucero
Pinback
Belle & Sebastian
Spiritualized
The Six Parts Seven
The Arcade Fire
Wilco
Damien Jurado
Rarae Avis
The Format
Boards of Canada
The Books
The Weakerthans
The Toadies
Q & Not U
Neutral Milk Hotel
Decemberists
Broken Social Scene
Arab Strap

edit: actually I don't think I would consider these bands underrated, because they are actually rated very highly. They are just unknown to most people.

Not underrated, they arent playing together anymore.

<--- hung out with trevor many a time at shows in central FL.

Great band about 2-3 cds ago.

Maybe I am old, I listened to and didn't care for either Badly Drawn Boy or The Shins... they reminded me John Lennon and Love and Rockets respectively...

thats fine, may I ask how old you are?
what genre do you generally enjoy? was there something you were looking for or just looking
for some obscure bands to check out? 😎

I'm 35, and this thread isn't meant just for me, so it's not important that I like every band mentioned. If someone does give one that I end up liking it will be a nice bonus though. My tastes are pretty broad but tend to naturally gravitate towards female singers who would be considered in the "alternative" (as ill-defined as that term is) and the "trance-techno" (again somewhat ill defined). In addition to some of the ones I've already named in the thread like Aimee Mann, Kate Bush, The Sundays, Olive, you could add (Natalie Merchant, Mandalay, Shawn Colvin, and to a lesser extent stuff like Massive Attack and Morcheeba, that sort of thing. I like music which is complex, challenging, and makes you actually LISTEN to it.

The Sneaker Pimps might be up your alley. They had a single "Six Underground" some years ago, but the whole album (Becoming X) is good. They are sort of like Portishead/Massive Attack and the lead vocalist is female.

probably not your cup of tea (cause you're so damn old!!), but see sig

you might like "Bowl Of Oranges" or "No Lies, Just Love" more. By the same band.

The whole album fevers and mirrors is great.

Shpongle-Tales of the Inexpressible(trance genius does acoustic...trance for people who don't like electronic music)
Dio-Holy Diver(perfect vocals...fuking amazing)
Depeche Mode-Violator(wasn't sure if I should include them in this thread but they are definitely underrated these days)
MC 900ft Jesus-Welcome to my Dream(a poet...no shit! Listen to the words, you'll get the music later 🙂
Orbital-Snivilisation(moving music forward while everyone else was going backward)

Lets see, I think you would like:
Shudder to Think
Tonya Donnelly (Belly)
Melissa Auf Der Maur (new album last year, can't remember the name)
Moodroom (NYC band, Fowl records)
Tsunami/Liquorice (4AD, Simple Machines Records)
Echobelly
Ryan Adams-Rocknroll
and maybe even a little Robbie Williams

i will never understand why people like this album so much. it's so much less cool than "the real thing." but yeah, faith no more doesn't get enough credit.

Indie bands overload- check out a british band called Doves and an older band named Red House Painters. Btw Pavement=underrated.

some good things mentioned here...some :disgust: things as well.

In the good column, I'll add:

Lucinda Williams
Over the Rhine
Elf Power
steven malkmus
Beth Orton
youssou n'dour
brian jonestown massacre
dandy warhols (ok, monkey house got famous, but their earlier stuff kicks ass too)
Architecture in Hlesinki
gillian welch
john frusciante (RHCP guittarist's solo stuff)
Minus 5
the rentals
spoon
ted leo & the pharmacists
U.N.K.L.E.
the Wrens

How about:

Saint Etienne (Brit pop with female vocal)
Thievery Corporation (ambient mellow trance/techno)
Sigur Ros (ambient experimental rock)

..Well if anything, Thievery Corp and Sigur Ros are probably not underrated, but may be obscure enough (for some) to warrant a listen.
