Is it possible that if you overclock your computer too much, that it underperforms???

For example,
I overclocked my computer a while ago, and i guess it ran a bit faster.
Recently, I overclocked it a lot more (it's still stable i guess, it doesn't crash), and I find that while playing a FPS, it runs a lot slower (frame skips, ping kinda high, choppy graphics, etc.). Is it underperforming, or am i just joining games that have high ping???

P.S. I have a pretty old machine, with a Pentium 3? and RIVA TNT2 32mb graphics card ??? that's why i tried overclocking it....

it's probably throttleing. when the temps get too high the chip automatically cuts power.

P3's don't throttle. They just shut themselves off if they overheat to prevent damage to the chip.

Now what you might have done is OC'ed your AGP or PCI buses out of spec (Almost sure you did as IIRC the P3s are all multi-locked and you definately don't have AGP or PCI locks on such a board). Your Graphics card or other subsystems evidently are not handling it well.

You should also make sure it is stable. Systems can boot when overly overclocked, but that does not mean they're functioning correctly. I'm not sure there is anything that "always happens" when you overclock too much, but some weird things can happen when you're not stable. As aka1nas has already mentioned, there is a good chance its one of your other parts causing the instability (perhaps your video card not liking the overclocked and unlocked bus), especially if you're not experiencing anything funny going on outside of gaming (which is all you've described as being problematic).

It's not likely you will get much headroom with a 1Ghz P3 btw. It was already the fastest model nearly of it's generation. The 1.13Ghz coppermine had to actually be recalled as they were unstable.
