hi,
im going to try to make this short. im currently a sophmore in college and have a brother who's applying to the same college i'm attending. i'm wondering if anyone knows the actual process as to how most colleges (nothing ivy league or anything like that) decide if you are in or not. is it a group of people or just one person? does it all take place on an oval table
? some of you have to know, either because you worked in admissions or a friend did? i really would like to know.. thanks
the reason why i'm soo interested is because of a personal situation: my brother calls the school asking how his application is doing (seeing that some of his friends have recieved decisions) and gets transferred to some (important?) lady.. she definately wasn't a secretary is what he says: and finds out that his application is halted due to the fact that they need some extra income tax information to see if he's eligible for a special program (that he applied for; which has lower academic standards).. in the case that he isn't eligible for the special program, the application is supposed to automatically get sent to the regular undergrad admissions process. anyway, this same person (definately on the admissions staff?) somehow pulled up his application and said that if he didn't get into the special program he would not be allowed in due to *A* low verbal score (his gpa is 3.83 and class rank is 6 out of 240, his verbal was 420, math 640.). she clearly read (off the screen?) his entire transcript to him (including his gpa, rank, and sat score) and made that decision instantly after he asked what were his chances of getting in if he wasn't eligible for the program. Is this really how the process works? or better said, how the process CAN work? One person can make a decision just like that? his grades are well above the standard and his sat is not all that low (for the school). his credentials are far better than mine when i got accepted. i guess i'm asking for some insight from you guys how this couldv'e happened? I find a decision so quickly made kind of.... fast?
do you think she was really high in rank? does anyone know if the person that 'pulled up' his application will most-likely be the same one to revise it afterwards (when the documents that the school is waiting for arrive)?
-how is it that his friend (same school, same race: hispanic), rank of 16, lower sats, was accepted (through regular admissions) but he (according to the lady) isn't going to be? personally, i think he got someone reviewing his application that is being a real b-tch OR was just trying to show off how much power she had by telling him bluntly that he will get denied enrollment (dont really see how you can get off from that heh)...anyway, should he REALLY be prepared for denied letter if he isn't eligible for that program??
** please note he just sent the documents they wanted 3 days ago.. therefore we have no REAL final decision and all speculation is based on the lady
excuse the spelling/grammar/etc. sorry. kind of late.
thanks.
