Who needs criminals when you got cops?

The two CHP officers started to walk away, but the protesters persisted, screaming at the two undercover cops. One of the officers pushed a protester aside. The man responded by pushing back and then the officer tackled him to the ground, handcuffing him.

The crowd, incensed, began to gather around them. The second officer pulled out his gun and pointed it at the crowd. More officers quickly arrived and dispersed the crowd.

So this crowd sounds like they are trying to prevent two people from walking away, and one cop has to push a person in the crowd aside, but then that guy pushed him back and then an "incensed" crowd surrounded two cops who were severely outnumbered.

The picture in the first post bothered me a lot until I read the context, then it bothered me less.

So when it comes to owning a gun, don't they teach you not to point it at stuff until you're ready to shoot?

this isn't new.

cops are always placed in protest to stir up the shit and then laugh when everyone they riled up gets arrested.

classic false flag.

There were four hippies with a cell phone surrounding him. He was ready, really almost forced, to shoot. The situation was getting so real that the sideways grip, reserved for only the most highly trained policemen and 90's gangsta rappers, had to be utilized.

Cops use gangster grip™?

I had the same thought...just needs to grab his crotch while shooting.

It bothers me regardless; he shoved someone out of the way...was that person trying to block them, or just standing there?

According the SFGATE/SF Chronicle and a photographer who was on the scene taking pictures the black undercover cop was assaulted as both men tried to move away from the mob that discovered they were cops as the mob was walking down the street smashing windows. Which is why his partner reacted as the crowd moved in to prevent them from leaving after they tried to tag along. Furthermore reporters on the scene were also attacked during that period of time as they took pictures and video of rioters/protesters looting and smashing windows of stores in downtown Berkeley.

An undercover California Highway Patrol officer who was attempting to infiltrate a demonstration against police brutality in Oakland pulled a gun on the protesters after he and his partner were outed and the partner was attacked

The undercover work — captured by a freelance photographer working for The Chronicle — raised questions about tactics employed by police and protesters as authorities seek to get a handle on rallies that have flooded the streets of Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco, at times shutting down freeways and devolving into vandalism and looting.

About 50 people were marching near Lake Merritt just after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when some of the demonstrators began calling out two men who were walking with the group, said the freelance photographer, Michael Short.

“Just as we turned up 27th Street, the crowd started yelling at these two guys, saying they were undercover cops,” Short said Thursday. “Somebody snatched a hat off the shorter guy’s head and he was fumbling around for it. A guy ran up behind him, knocked him down on the ground. That guy jumped backed up and chased after him and tackled him and the crowd began surging on them.

“The other taller guy had a small baton out,” Short said. “But as the crowd started surging on them, he pulled out a gun.”.

Oakland police Lt. Chris Bolton tweeted about a report of “an officer in need of assistance” near the Whole Foods on Bay Place north of Lake Merritt.

Bolton, though, said the men were not Oakland police officers and later confirmed on Twitter that they were CHP officers. Frank Bonifacio, an Oakland police spokesman, said the department responded to “a request for assistance made by an outside agency near Bay and Harrison Streets in Oakland.”

“We have received a number of questions about the incident,” Bonifacio said in an e-mail Thursday. “We are referring all inquiries regarding this incident to the California Highway Patrol.”

CHP officials did not return calls for comment.

Short said the undercover officers were wearing street clothes and had their faces covered. After the shorter officer tackled the person who attacked him, he pulled out a set of handcuffs. The taller man then radioed for help, Short said.

Prior to the encounter, vandals marching with the group had smashed the windows of a T-Mobile store in Oakland’s Chinatown neighborhood and made off with some of the store’s merchandise, Short said. A nearby Wells Fargo ATM was also smashed.

Several protesters took to Twitter to say that the undercover officers had instigated acts of vandalism and were banging on windows alongside others.

Short said he did not see the officers’ actions because protesters had surrounded him and had tried to take the memory card out of his camera. Noah Berger, another freelance photographer, was similarly accosted by protesters.

The march had earlier been peaceful, beginning in Berkeley with hundreds of participants calling for justice for Michael Brown and Eric Garner, two unarmed black men who were killed by white police officers in Missouri and New York. The recent demonstrations were set off when grand juries declined to file charges in the cases.

Protesters on Wednesday disrupted traffic at times, as well as a UC Berkeley lecture given by PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, but did not attempt to take over any freeways. Oakland police said arrests were made, but did not specify how many and for what reasons.

I'm not thinking they needed any encouragement.

I was robbed at gunpoint once, and the cops asked me what the gun looked like.

Well there you go. That's what the gun looked like. :)

welp i guess it's official.....

remember when i made that thread asking if you guys thought there was a chance of agent provocateurs involved in the protests?

and you guys all said i was crazy..

i'll call the next move too.
next it's going to be foreign agent provocateurs, probably Russian, or a hired mercenary, possibly a sniper on a roof, going to snipe a riot cop during the protests....

what happens after that, is pretty damn scary. i think there is potential for the country to spiral quickly into revolution.

if an officer was sniped, during the protests, martial law would indeed be instated, it would be the logical choice.... regular citizens would take up arms.

Yeah, that's so crazy. Why would they send an undercover cop into these protests? They are always so peaceful. And pulling a gun on such a peaceful crowd? I'm sure they were gathering around to shake his hand. Very peaceful people.

Pretty dumb of the undercover cop - had there been an unknowing police officer with the same 'bravado', he would have been gunned down.

Of course if the cops didn't infiltrate the crowd this incident would never have happened.

Ask yourself a question. If you, me, or any regular citizen pulled a gun out like that would a prosecutor file charges?

This.

I'm definitely against over-use of force, but this case seems justified.

Another angle (Note that his finger is not on the trigger):

I have no problem with the "infiltration" of criminal groups and "protesters" that often turn criminal/violent, and I certainly have no problem with the officer pulling his weapon when members of the group assault (or attempt to assault) the officers.

lol, "infiltrate?!" What is this, some top secret organization? How about, if the crowd didn't push the cops and start surrounding them like they were about to attack them, this wouldn't have happened. Again the deflection from the real problem. Why can't a cop walk among them? They weren't doing anything wrong.

Ask yourself a question. If you, me, or any regular citizen pulled a gun out like that would a prosecutor file charges?

The answer is, most likely not. If a citizen with a concealed carry pulled his gun on a threatening mob surrounding him, I'm sure no charges would have been filed. What, would you have preferred one of the mod members jump the cop while others join in and THEN have the cop pull his weapon and actually have to discharge it? And then you'd have another BS story about a cop shooting another "innocent" unarmed black person. Give me a freakin' break.

How about this for a solution, quit fvcking committing crimes, talking sh!t to cops, and instigating cops and I'm sure the issues would DRASTICALLY decrease. But I guess that's too difficult to do, so let's deflect and blame the problem on the cops.

Sarcasm?

Two cops causing a mob to violence and vandalism?

I love being right.

No evidence the cops are agent provocateurs at all.
