Undercover cop confesses to sending 150+ people to prison wrongfully

Source

Patrick O'Brien wrote to Chief Justice Dame Sian Elias admitting to perjury, saying he was racked with guilt after carrying a "dreadful secret" for more than 30 years.

Now nearly 60, O'Brien was an undercover agent in covert drugs operations in the 1970s, immersed in a dark, criminal underworld, and the star Crown witness in the resulting court trials.

However, O'Brien says he lied on oath every time he took the stand.

In the confession letter, he said he could not guess the number of people with convictions or imprisoned "because of my lies", because he stopped counting arrests at 150, halfway through his three-year stint.

Wow.

ugh. makes me wonder how many other officers have done this? seems so easy to do.

at least he admited it now.

ugh, great, wheres our resident cop hating tard? I'll bet he'll masturbate to this news.

You should make it clear it's New Zealand before the anti-Americans start crapping on the thread.

Here, we need to make that message louder:

There, that should do it.

That doesn't mean much - this happens in every country. Being a good cop, career-wise, and being a good cop, morally, can be two different thing. The cop with the most busts and the most perps behind bars is technically the "best", but that doesn't automatically imply legality and morality.

In the article he says he was just following orders. In other words he's a coward.

Yeah, but there has to be some reason why he was given those orders. I don't buy that all of those people were completely innocent. They probably were involved with drugs but they didn't have enough evidence to prove it so they planted it.

Who cares if they weren't completely innocent? That doesn't absolve any of the guilt for lying in court.

All cops lie. But so does the rest of our species. Think about how many times you have lied at work.

I think its total bullshit that lying cops ruin people's lives and I wish there was a way to fix it...but there isn't.

This is EXACTLY what is wrong with America. Cops can just go on the stands an in our American courts they get these insane verdicts just because these crooked American cops take advantage of the system. Only in the good 'ol US of A can such injustice occur.
