Underclocking the Duron so it won't get as hot.

I've got an Duron 600 that will supposedly 1000. My Abit Kt7 is going to arrive at the end of the week but my Alpha Pal 6035 HSF won't get here for another 2 weeks. The L1 Brides are connected using the pencil trick on this cpu, I was just wondering if I could underclock it to like 400mhz (4x*100) so I could use my retail HSF that came with my celeron 566.

There were some problems with using Intel type HSF's on AMD chips - something about damaging the core from too much pressure - AMD core is slightly taller than INTEL? I'd say to check the apps data for the HSF to see if it can be used before trying it.

I also have a generic hsf. Should I just wait till my Alpha gets here, just so I stay on the safe side?

Is it posible though for the Duron to underclock?

Yes it's possible but I dont think an intel heatsinc will do any good at cooling it so I would wait for the alpha.

i agree, i'd wait until the Alpha gets there. plus i dont think the intel will fit very well if at all. better to be on the safe side ;)

plus, how would you start it up before underclocking? it could overheat and fry before you get into the bios(unless you're using jumpers)
