Underclocking resources?

Lots of info on overclocking all over the net, but can anyone recommend good resources for underclocking? I'd like to build a system with as few fans as possible (watercooling isn't a practical option for this particular machine) and want to know how low I'd have to underclock, say, an Athlon XP to be able to get away with just a decent heatsink, and what other issues might come up if I did that. I assume someone, somewhere, must have some information on this kind of stuff, but I haven't been able to turn it up.

You could step down the clock multiplier to a notch or two and leave the FSB at 100 or 133 whichever is default for your mobo. Decreasing the FSB can seriously criple the performance. it'll perform like sh!t. so my bet would be lower the multiplier and that will drop the CPU temp more effectively.

I'm running my 1700 xp at 137 fsb, and have decreased the cpu voltage from 1.74 to 1.64 volts on the shuttle ak31 for lower temps.

well... I have a slot tbird 700, it runs stable at 500, 1.5 vcore fanless. However, my heatsink is the giant alpha p7125... smaller heatsinks might not work. However, I've come up with a better solution - I can cool my whole computer (even with my tbird OC"ed from 700 to 750 with one fan. a little air for the video card, a little for the cpu, and the rest for the power supply. (I run open-case though)

Why would you need to underclock? It seems to me that all you need to do is grab the slowest processor. (Or try one of VIA's CPUs I've
Heard that they run cool.

excellent point. if you grab a Via C3 800mhz, it doesn't need a fan. for that matter, I saw some video (like the THG one) comparing it to a P3. take off the heatisnk during quake. P3 locks in 5 seconds. C3 goes for 24 hours before the testers give up! :D
