underclocking athlon xp

I have an athlon xp 1800+ (palmino) in a slim pc that I am using as a htpc. I want to underclock it to about 1000 mhz, at this temp is it safe to run it with passive cooling? If not what is a safe temp to run it with just a heatsink, my motherboard is asus a7x8-mx.

I don't think running it at 1GHz will be easy to passively cool. By the way, have you read that new article at Tomshardware about underclocking the AMD CPUs? That is a good article and if you're thinking about underclocking, I suggest that you read it first.

At what temp? I see none mentioned.

How low a vcore can you get it stable at 1000mhz, and what are the temps at that speed and vcore (even with the HS fan)?

i have an AthlonXP 2400+ (Tbred) and it is getting toooooo hot (not by porno thingys ;-)) so i underclocked it from 133x15 to 100x15=1500 (1800+) and now there are no freeze-ups anymore but still temperature 50C+, the heatsink is coolermaster with copper core and big fan, but anyways seems AMD didn't test it for high temp summers 🙂

The big thing holding you back from possibly getting it passively cooled is that it's a Palomino. I'd just try running it with a good heatsink and an undervolted fan.
