Im looking to build an e-mail server for a buddy of mine it must be left on all the time and would be best if it made little to no noise at all.

Would the best method be Underclocking say a Duron 1300 to something like 900 to get it to virtually run silent. Is that possible or the same as using a Duron 900?

Since his family will be the only ones on the box a mere 600mhz is even overkill.

The purpose is super low heat so the fan never really spins up and no noise?

Anyone try underclocking CPU's to try and make a silent PC if so can you link me to the article?

You could do it with any multi-unlocked chip like an XP mobile, or a cheaper option is the Applebred Core Durons. They're rediculous cheap, amazing overclockers, and fully multi-unlocked in a nForce 2 motherboard [also cheap as chips - no pun intended] so you could step the multi down and keep the bus speed etc. I know I've used a few of these chips to make budget gamin machines running @2.4GHz.

With having less cache as well it'll run slightly cooler, so when you underclock it using the multi you shouldn't have a problem.

Just make sure to lower the voltage as well.

If you lower the over all Mhz and voltage then have the power supply fan near the heatsink you might be able to run it without a fan on the heatsink.
