Pentium 4 530-3000MHz, G41M-ES2L,512M ram,onboard graphics.Just hate the cpu fan sound.
Tried lowering the fsb to 100 (and other values between 100 to 200).Lowered the cpu voltage also. when pc starts, i hear a sound from dvd-rw (cycles) and intial boot(bios) takes a long time ;finally pc boots at full 3GHz.
Sometimes it boots to 1700-1800 Ghz(i forget the actual value).
Can someone help me in underclocking please? Do i have to adjust terminal, reference voltages.(right now Vcpu =1.360 -1.344 in cpu-z).
Thanks

Well, i tried c1e off in bios - did not help.
Today tweaked fsb to 120 ( or 122) in bios- 2 times pc has booted to core speed 1836-1837MHz now. (cpu-z :1.344v, fsb-122.5) . fan is quiet (don't know if c1e is still off). Did not lower the cpu voltage in bios much (just 2-3 tabs of minus key).
Anyone- if c1e is off, at 1836Mhz - how much difference in power saving is there if c1e is on? cpu temp-41 deg. C right now (CPUID hardware monitor). Ambient -about 27 deg. C.
1. Would the pc be more stable if c1e is off (and fsb is lowered?)
2. Anyone can tell me about adjustments , if any, to Terminal voltage, reference voltage. Right now they are on auto.
Thanks

Underclocking follows basically the same rules as overclocking.

Step1: Set all voltages manually to default (Max you want if overclocking)
Step2: One at a time, slowly lower individual things until they become unstable (raise individual things if overclocking)
Step3: Combine individual values or close to it for some cushion.

During all of this, you will want to keep all power saving modes, which includes C1e. Since it looks like you are doing this for power savings, once you found your lowest clocks start lowering voltages regardless of if you know what they do or not (if you don't mind some silent data loss)

c1e is what enables your computer to appear (and sound) as if it is completely powered down when in fact it is just sleeping. Pretty much everything shuts off. The cd drive will not open. It saves a lot of power and is a must have for any desktop that is left on all the time.

I dont get why you'd have trouble booting at half fsb. Have you tried increasing your memory ratio so that your memory speed doesnt get cut in half? If that helps then maybe some of your ram timings are too slow.

Thanks Ben90 and sm625.
Rebooted- put c1e on and reduced cpu v to 1.337v (1.375 is default) in bios ( fsb is 120 in bios but showing as 122.5MHz in cpu-z). Noted that cpu temp. and fan speed is same as before with c1e off and cpu volt. 1.350v-40 deg. C and fanspeed-2300 to 2400.
sm625, pc is not on 24 hrs. I use it and shut down atleast 4-5 times a day. My concern is mainly about fan sound ( less cpu temp. would also be nice, power saving would be a bonus).
FSB:DRAM is 3:4 as per cpu-z. dram frq. is 163.3MHz (Max. bandwith: PC2-4300 (266MHz) )
In Bios- some ram settings - i can cycle thro foll. values: Auto,2.66C, 3.33C and 4.00C). - sm625, can you suggest what value should be chosen here?
Anybody can throw a light on what cpu termination and reference voltage mean?

If you want to make a fan quieter, you can always insert a resistor in the 12V power line going to the fan. That takes the fan voltage down to 8-10 volts, wherever you need it, you just get the right resistor. I use a pot to set the fan where I want it then read the pot to see what resistor I need. I have turned many a rocket turbine into decently quiet PCs.

You can reduce the fan speed by getting a Zalman Fanmate 2 controller for about $7-8. It has a variable control and can be adjusted to run the fan pretty slow -- making the fan nice and quiet. Used one with my old Celeron-T CPU for years.

reduced cpu v to 1.325v in bios . 2nd time reboot was forced at 3GHz. So keeping v at @ 1.335 . Increased the fsb to 122 in bios (was 120). Intelburntest passed with 220mb free ram.
Thanks guys for the tip re. the resister. 2300-2400 rpm i can tolerate/can hardly hear the sound.
Might try the ram values to see if i can go lower than 120 fsb.

system memory multiplier (bios)-4.00C. Fsb -102. Cpu V (bios)-1.287v. PC boots. Corespeed-1543 MHz (cpu-z).
Fanspeed:2100-2200rpm. Cpu temp:38-39 deg. C (at nighttime-cooler ambient). Fsb:ram-1:2 (cpu-z). Will try lower cpu voltage.

Intelburn v3.2 test passed at V=1.212v in Bios. Fanspeed @2000rpm (right now , at night , showing 1860 rpm) ,Temp. :33-39/40 (cpuid). As terminal voltage is set (default) at 1.2 v, i might not go lower than 1.212v . Dram Freq. : 205.7 in cpuz.
Will set speed/voltage at 3.0 GHz/default while encoding in vdub and clonedvd. Thanks.

Auto Booted to 3.0GHz. Hence increased fsb to 103 in Bios (showing 103 in cpu-z) AND Vcpu to 1.225v. Fan-2100rpm @37C (cpu); ambient @24C.
