For 50 million people who can't afford health care, and untold millions more who can't afford adequate coverage, Medicare is better than private insurance.

Theres everything wrong with it. Its not the system that will succeed or fail, its the people who use it. Look at the rampant abuse of our current social programs, people who simply abuse the programs to forego having to work. People who would use these systems without paying into the system due to being illegals. The demographics are just5 too different to think we can emulate a successful system elsewhere.

More fact-free parroting of right-wing myths and paranoia while ignoring the real issues. Have I said recently paid propagandists have more honesty and sense than some here? Ya, I did.

You mean facts like these showing the failings of government run healthcare? They cant get the DMV right and you want them to manage the medical system......

We need to immediately dismantle our militaries, police depts, fire dpts, postal system, libraries, and public education. They can't get the DMV right, so they shouldn't do anything really. We trust them with $500 billion a year for our military!?!? Not to mention endless useless wars and occupations! This is something I could get behind!

Can we get some Canadians to comment on the OP?

Sure I'll share my experiences.

Cost: Up until this year I paid $0, now I make enough that I pay $22/month. Since I got a raise this year it will presumably go up some small amount next year.

1. When I was young I smashed my head on something, bled a lot. Was driven to the local hospital and got stitches right away.

Cost: $0.

2. Broke my leg, compound fracture tib+fib. Got an ambulance to the local hospital where I had an x-ray and some pain meds. Was then transferred to a larger city by ambulance where I got surgery from a specialist. Spent two weeks in that hospital before being sent home with pins in my leg (but no cast, it was neat). Went back to large city hospital after 4 more weeks to have pins removed & cast applied. Cast was later removed at local hospital. Also received physiotherapy to restore atrophied muscles.

Cost: $0.

3. Got some kind of infected lump on my back. Went to a walk-in clinic where i waited all of 10 minutes, got a prescription for antibiotics right away.

Cost: ~$40 for the meds. $0 to see doctor.

I see the cost of health care as very good for what I get.

I can only equate health care in the USA to dental care here. I have been unable to afford dental care for many years, and am very happy to have gotten dental coverage at work, to the extent that I would hesitate to change jobs.

It must be terrible being tied to your job due to health coverage. Where I can exercise proper dental hygene to stave off dental expenses, accidents and illness can strike at random and as I understand financially destroy a person.
Thanks. Just what I expected. HTTP 404: Republican boogeyman not found.

Reason I like it. everyone is covered. Not just people whose jobs pay for it, not just people who pay 50-500$ per month, everyone. Goddamn fucking everyone. I love my people and hell yes I would pay a little extra to help them (which would be taken up if I was paying insurance anyways). Yes it has its flaws, it can be a little slower for things than the US, but ya know it works and no one gets told by an insurance company that their surgery isn't necessary (because I want some asshole and not a doctor saying I can live or die).

People with money will go where they can get to the head of the line fastest, thus Canadians will head to the US for some treatments, just as some americans will head elsewhere for other things (like up here for reasonably priced medicine - funny how most ignore that part).

Spidey is a tool. I hope one day he gets HORRIBLY sick (and fuck you yes I am wishing pain and suffering on your ass, eat a dick) and his insurance drops him for a spelling error on his original application. I wanna see how fast your opinion would chance when you have to sell everything just to pay for half of your surgery.

There is your problem. You love other people. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!

That may be true, but having Canadian health care is better than not having any at all or having the current Emergency Room-based system. Also, you might gain a benefit by no longer having to worry about whether or not you'll lose your health coverage and a great many businesses, especially small businesses, might benefit by not having to worry about it any longer.

Having Canadian health care is good for the 46 million uninsured, but for me who is sitting happy with my private health insurance, how do I benefit? I have great health insurance coverage already.

Would you give it up for a tax cut if given a choice?

Well, since the US fed pays a higher percentage of GDP for healthcare, the question should be:

"Would you give it up and pay MORE tax, if given a choice?"

No thanks.

What? The government runs healthcare cheaper than the private sector. By far.

RLY? Are you gonna spew the 2% bullshit that's been debunked a million times? How is it cheaper? It's only cheaper when you get equivalent care. Right now I don't see Medicare providing BETTER care than private insurance.

Your private insurance is paid by your employer at a HUGE expense. Would you like to continue having the costs raise, taking more out of your actual salary, or perhaps would you prefer not having to worry about losing your job and being able to take more home?
