Under 25 and getting a rental car.

Renting in the SRQ (Sarasota / Bradenton FL) area and trying to find a rental car for <$200 is like trying to find a M$ server with more than 45 days uptime.

The best 'deal' I could find is with Enterprise ($10/day under 25 surcharge) for a 1 week rental they want $238 for a Standard and $245 for a FullSize. I've got a wife and 6mo old so the FullSize sounds more appealing for an extra $7, but that still sucks.

Jan 4 (10am) thru Jan 11 (10am), 24 years old. Any suggestions?

edit: I don't have to pick it up at the airport.

enterprise i believe is the ONLY one that will rent to under 21 with that 10 / day surcharge.. i know i had do deal with it when i was 19.

let your parents rent one and cosign it to you.

I have to be listed as a driver in order for my ins. coverage to take effect. Listing me as a driver = surcharge anyway.

24. I wish the surcharge was only for <21 and not 21-24.

I rented with Budget as well in the DC area, no extra charge. I think they sometimes make exceptions according to your driving record.

But wouldn't your parents trust you enough to say they are going to be the ones driving it?

Funny you should say that...

My dad and I were in NC for a wedding when I was 18. He rented a Ford Ranger. He wouldn't let me drive it because the insurance wouldn't cover me if anything happened. The day of the wedding, three of us (dad, me, and one other 19yo guy) were looking for the groom's blazer to .. uh .. decorate? My dad let the other guy borrow the truck briefly to drive around the church property as he thought he might know where it was. He backed into a tree doing about $800 worth of damage. My dad learned his lesson.

Not a chance. (and I've got a good driving record)

Looks like I'm going to bite the bullet and put out $245 for 1wk for a Full Size car.

Please Note: If the renter is under 25 years of age a $110.00 fee will apply in the NY Tri-State area.
I just pulled the above quote off of the Avis site. I'm currently looking at a rental for the Holiday, and noticed that bit of information. I wonder why Avis just applies that surcharge to the NY tri-state area?

If you don't live in that area, you might want to check with Avis to avoid paying the surcharge that the other companies want you to pay.

I rented a car (ford focus) from enterprise in beverly hills for $150 for a week.
I called and asked for a quote but instead of a quote, I was asked the price range I was willing to pay.
I said I wanted to pay $150 max and the lady I spoke with was okay with that so she sent somebody to pick me up.
This was back in 2002 though....
