Since this is about the only Forum I hang out at on Anandtech, I decided to post this here:
Couple months ago I added my email to my signature and today I received my first spam from someone claiming to have found me on anandtech:

-------EMAIL STARTS--------------

Subject: Hey! I read your post in the forum at Anandtech.

Hey!

I?m ElectroGuy478 and I read your post in a forum at anandtech and you seemed interested in computers and electronics. Since batteries are practically a necessity for all electronical devices, I use rechargeables. I looked at BestBuy and Compusa, but their
Rechargeable batteries are sold in packs of8 for $28.00, that's $3.50 each!!! So I turned to the internet and I found a great site offering great rechargeable batteries for $1.60 a piece. It's really cheap and worth every cent! I'm just trying to do you a favor - I buy from
them myself. Save some money! Here?s the link:

I would never purchase anything from a spammer despite how bad I might need the what they are offering.

BTW vladgur - Spammers can still get your email address from your eBay user ID or you domain name registration via the links in your SIG.

You can never be 100% safe, but displaying my email in my sig was just asking for it :(

well if the mods of this forum could compare the ip addresses of the registered users against the spammers ip address --
user-0cceqsu.cable.mindspring.com 24.199.107.158 we could probably get some insight as to who is doing this, otherwise that ElectroGuy478 is not a registered nickname here

A thought, Mindspring was bought my earthlink. Even though I'm registered through mindspring, I can still get an earthlink email address.

Just another source to spam me from I suppose. I get over 100 pieces of spam a day. Some days over 200 pieces of spam.
Cloudmark is starting work but I'm still having to tell cloudmark to block over half the spam I get.
This should be less than fun seeing as if you want to sell or buy in forsale/trade you have to have your email address visible in your profile, this makes it easy to get harvested. :(

Hang 'em up by his testicles and beat him until he passes out. Repeat for each known spamming offence ;)

Is there something that can be done? I don't receive spam at all because this is my official email account and I only use it sparingly when signing up for stuff.

Always hide your email address and NEVER put it in a signature. And if you must post a email address anywhere on any site, set up a temporary email address using HOTMAIL or other service, and use that. And always use that address when joining new websites forums. That will keep spam out of your permanent email.
