Totally looking forward to this game. having said that...
With their 9 on ODST and their 9.5 on Uncharted 2, I think it's safe to say IGN is a probably website offering a certain score or above to get the nod for an early review posting on both sides of the fence. People in the industry or what have previously been in the industry will tell you this happens all too often. Having seen some of the reviews coming from PC Gamer, I think they're probably also doing it.
I've thought this for a long time and have seen some seriously early reviews coming from them giving games scores they didn't deserve while the rest of the reviews from more reliable sites tending to fall 10-30% lower.
I pretty much no longer trust IGN for any game review.
This can definitely be the case, but... there is some history to look into.
First, Uncharted was amazing. Uncharted 2 looks like destroy Uncharted.
The game has gone gold, so review copies have been shipping out. As other sites put their review up, we'll see a more typical score. However, other places are also giving high scores.
The main thing is Sony just knows this is a good product. While I expect some places may get bribed, some games Sony has thought was a huge AAA title and gave review copies early, ended up not getting great scores. Sony knew of the success of Uncharted, and sees this as being equally as successful of a title. So now they want to try and build up legit hype, and I fully expect that 250gb Uncharted 2 PS3 Slim bundle to be real, look to be announced soon. That's going to be their big system seller for the season. GT5 will be the European system seller, they are huge about racing over there. Just like Forza 3 will be Microsoft's system seller in Europe.
