As far as extravagent spending for cases go, for the large majorty of people hanging out at Anandtech, building computers is a pure hobby. We upgrade components because we WANT to, not because we NEED to. As such, spending a little more on a component that's enjoyable to work with and looks good goes with the territory.
If you consider how people spend hundereds of dollars to upgrade a cpu/motherboard/memory, spending a little more on a case that will last for several years, and several upgrades, seems insignificant.
