Don't charge your friends who are completely computer illterate, thats what friends are for to help each other out. Also sounds like the computer was about to take a dump, ever thought about a fresh start on the OS?

Me? Sure I have. But he, I'm, sure, has a ton of things he cannot affort to loose.
you do know that you can re-install XP without losing the old stuff, right?

I do that all the time just to get the system back up and running when there is a huge crash.

EDIT: he may have a proprietary setup and therefore no XP cd, but instead a recovery CD. You may have to use yours in order to salvage his system.

yes thats right this can be done, just dont format the drive, install xp over the old one and everything else is still there!
This really works? You can re-install on the same partition?
assuming you use an XP cd (Pro or Home depending on what is there) you can boot off the CD.

Follow the set up prompts. You will see something about repair console. Forget that. Keep following the prompts until you are given a choice that includes repair. Choose that and follow the install setup.

Try that and see what happens.

There is also SFC but that hasn't always worked for me.

Well, here is what happened. After several chkdsks and Windows repairs, the thing would still not boot into windows. So, I re-installed Windows over the existing version. Beautiful, all seems fine and well. However, during installation I had to call to ask for the CD-key, which, ofcoarse this person did not know. So, I grabbed a keygen online to take care of it. Straighforward enough, this has worked countless times. Well, not so easy this time. Apparently, Windoes new security on pre-built machines won't allow for a reinstallation of the OS without activiating it first. Great. So, I'm thinking I will have to re-install again, get his valid CD-key, and activiate it.

Yea, because, you know the computer powering down in the middle of an update was something I had planned on. Wait untill you run into something you can't fix.

Before XP activation, you could use any old disk to reinstall an OS. This is one of the many headaches with XP, where you are trying to use the product legitimately but it's a pain in the ass. One of the reasons I don't do this kind of tech support for friends anymore, unless they have or want to pay for a new OS license up front.
