eventually, one of the vandals, however, turned himself into police, saying that he was paid by the transportation director to vandalize the buses. even more shocking is that the bus repair company was the transportation dude's father's company.

the guy served two years, i think. the incident was even mentioned in US news and world report in '99 or so.

so much for his career.

i say you follow a similar path.

Funny thing is, it's the little guy that gets sh!t on and thrown in jail for doing roughly the same thing Halliburton is.

Take it to P&N - I'm sure you'll find someone there who cares.

You'd better do something about this. Report him, file a claim or something. Call the police to see if it's illegal.

He's going to do this to someone who isn't savvy enough to look up the business.

Yeah....send him to a federal pound-him-in-the-arse prison.

if Florida requires contractor licenses, contact the board. Unethical behavious is grounds for revocation of a contractor's license.

fl.. blah.. my friend's parents had a whole lot of trouble w/ a development company... they screwed up where they built t he house, marked off lines WITHOUT consulting my friend's parents... which causes them to have to haul in a couple truckloads of sand... etc, etc... everything was written in the contract, the company really was at a loss... but not a single lawyer would take the case. They say the laws/loopholes all bend to the developers and the likelihood of getting anything... sucks.

blah, not helpful, but i'm in a ranting mood.

Gee. . .Sounds like somebody's trying to take advantage of them? No! You think??
As soon as I heard a $32,000 estimate to fix some loose/missing shingles and couple "small" leaks I'd have kicked that contractor square in the nuts and told him to never set foot on my property again. Of course it would never have come to that because as soon as the buyer mentioned he had "a friend in the roofing business" I'd have just said, "Yeah so do I. I'll have him come do the job."

Yeah the guy is trying to swindle your parents. If he wanted them to lower the asking price he should have just made a lower offer to begin with. Still, they should get the roof fixed before relisting the home. Loose this buyer. Who knows what he'll try next.

I don't know how the laws are in florida for builders/contractors but at the very least I bet you could get his license or accreditation revoked for this. That would pretty much ruin his business.

I have seen situations like this before where unscrupulous contractors who run their own contracting firms get on projects that are managed by my company in project management type positions and then use their position to fill the project with their own contractors instead of regular full time employees from my company. No doubt they are giving kickbacks to somebody in my company to look the other way and they have also listed their wives as the presidents of their firms on paper so everything looks nice and tidy when the conflict of interest questions start coming up. But it's a pretty vain attempt. . .its such a paper thin veil.

That is actually the best idea I've seen on this topic so far. Put them out there in front of everybody. I bet the journalist crew would dig up a whole bunch of other unsavory stuff this guy has done in the past as well.

I'd have your parents contact an attorney ASAP. Once they have a signed contract, it depend son what the stipulations are if there's a natural disaster that happens in between the contract being signed and the actual closing.

Your parents should also get their own quotes for having the roof replaced. And do NOT under any circumstances take the full price of the roof off the selling price of the house. Have it fixed and then UP the price because now he's getting a brand new roof. Of if they wanted, they could maybe take off half if they were feeling generous.

As has been alluded to, regardless of if your folks accept the original offer (pending their own resolution to the roof) or if they reject the offer and relist, this business should be reported. I'd aggregate some documentation of the scam and provide it to the BBB, any licensing boards that the business operates under as well as the state attorney general.

It may be a good idea to for your folks to contact a real estate or consumer advocacy attorney....EDIT: sounds like you have that covered...

Don't worry, they will be reported to all the applicable agencies and consumer protection hotlines.

I'll keep this updated as i learn more.
