Words of advice: Do. Not. Just. Sit. There.
Call your brother up and take him out to a dinner AT LEAST!
Do NOT just thank him verbally.
Do NOT wait.
Don't let this event turn sour.
I've called him 3 times since then and sent him pics. He's a super guy and I can't imagine it going sour. I've given him cars in the past so maybe he's just gesturing back?
If he wasn't 2000 miles away I'd kiss him!!

They are right, get a Kryptonite New York as soon as you can.
Also, register your bike with the National Bike Registry at: www.nationalbikeregistry.com
Lastly, if your homeowners/renters insurance has a coverage option for it. Get it!

Is it really nessary to do all three?

It's a $3000 bike, if they made alarm systems for Bicycles I'd tell him to get that too. Losing a $70 department store bike is one thing. Losing a $3000 bike is a travesty.

very nice. I don't think I could have taken it though...
I thought about refusing it...really I did.
I felt compelled to accept this gift from him. It means a lot to me and I think it meant a lot to him to be able to give it to me.

Because he's not a good person. I could write a book on this jerk, his children and his wife. A few brief examples
1. he convinced my sister to co-sign for a car for him. he didn't pay. she was stuck with a 5,000 dollar debt.
2. he had a settlement of some kind for roughly 50,000 dollars after the car debacle. gave my sister nothing.
3. dumps his trailer trash children off at my mom's without so much of an explaination on weekends... and brags about it.
4. his daughter hit my mom, in my presence. i commenced to spanking her as if she was my own. he threatened to kill me.
I could go on and on but if my brother were to DIAF, I wouldn't shed one tear, nor would he for me.

All mid range price bike & above weight about the same, however the components are what cost (mostly because of the name). Races bike in the late 80s & early 90s on the cheapest components that do the job (Shimano 105), because nice components get trash just as quick as the cheapest ones. Bike frames can also cost quite high when you go with custom with titainium/highquality carbon, while most good off the rack steel frames can do just as good of a job.Originally posted by: destined

thats a nice gesture by your brother. but why is that bike worth that much? wheres the spinning rims? or the pegs?
Quality bikes are expensive, there's no way around it.
$500-1000 is entry level when it comes to real bikes.

i haven't ridden a bike for so long. i miss those days. are nice bikes lighter?
Today custome frames cost from about $800-900 to well over $5,000. Components could set you back an additional $1500, and then you still have to spend some more on wheels....some wheels cost well over $1000 each.Originally posted by: raystorm
Awesome gift there.
I had no clue good bikes could cost 1500 bucks.. yeesh. I want a bike myself for casual riding/exercise and I was hoping a good one would cost around 500. Eh..its been 12 years since I had a bike so I guess I've been out of the loop for awhile.
