<< Below is a list of popular E-mail services that were banned due to abuse, and will not be re-activated upon user request >>

Thats not right! I lost my DSL and can't get it back because of a digital loop in my phone line. So now, I have no choice but to use AOL because i'm sharing it, thus, its free for me. There's no chance in hell that I would pay a monthly fee to use a stinky dial up service. Which brings me to my point - why can't AOL users post on AT? What 'abuse' was caused that AOL is banned from AT?

BTW, I posted this by using JUNO. But JUNO is gay as well as Netzero with all those banners and bullsh!t... I have no other alternatives, unban AOL servers!

---

Don't count on it happening in this millennium.

I personally spent almost two hours on hold, trying to get tech support to stop some malicious trolls. Anand had the same experience with them. Every other major ISP has cooperated with us when we needed their help. When we banned AOL, we had less than 15,000 members. We are now over 76,000 and we are still growing.

They might be able to do something if you inquired about paying for the service..

Wow you're more of a raging-b1tch than I am! Complaining about your rights, then losing DSL, then AOL, then AOL because it's free, then a monthly fee for stinky internet service, then Juno, then Netzero. Please.

If you can get AOL to actually do something about trolls then the mods might change the policy but quite frankly AOL doesn't care about it's users making trouble so it's not getting unbanned.

I bet if you subscribed to the service, they would let your AOL IP in. As a subscriber AOL users probably wouldn't troll and risk getting banned and losing their money.

Of course paying for the boards is apparently unethical ?!

Look at it this way: You're not paying for your ISP, would it kill you to drop $2.50/month to use AT? If so, maybe you should give up on AT.

how exactly is that unethical? it might be wasteful, or even stupid. but i'm not sure how paying for a forum brings up ethics. anyway, get a real ISP like the rest of us or suffer, why should you be exempt from having to pay for dialup if no one else is?

There are lots of other free email services that aren't banned. You just need to look.

And I'd rather pay for a real ISP then use a free aol account.

he isnt complaining about the email ban, he is complaining about the IP ban on AOL's range. Personally, i'm happier AOL isnt accepted here, they dont care what their users do, which is why they got banned in the first place.

....and in Anandtech News today; thaRealest has now officially become theBannedest....in other AT news.....

Well, you have a right to ask for whatever you want. However, there's a nice way and a not so nice way. Guess which tone you chose? Hint: read the Title of this thread......

You mustttttttttttt! Heh, I don't believe they MUST do anything. They MAY, but I think they wontttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt.

Hey trollboy:
Look at it this way--you can pay $240/year for AOL's half-rate service or you can pay $30/year to line Anand's pockets.
You pick.

You can't get something for nothing. If you don't like the subscription service, don't pay. Lord knows I won't pay for this, I don't think it's worth it.

At the moment you can either pay for an ISP or pay less to use AT through the ISP you're not paying for. Either way you're going to have to pay SOMEONE....
Given the choice, I'd rather pay $30 to an enterprising young student than an anti-competitive and monopolistic conglomerate like AOLTimeWarner.

well said.

However, i'd rather not pay at all... "why pay for something thats free" - thats my motto... it aint cheap, its just an alternative to obtaining something with the same equivalence but without the cost :)

Naturally--I agree with you on that. The speed and ads and PM limits don't bother me, so there's no need for me to subscribe.
I guess the way I see it is I'm paying $40/month for my Internet access. If I was getting Internet access for free, but my free ISP was blocked from AT and I wanted it that bad, $30 for the year isn't all that much...less than one month of cable access.

Ah well...you're just screwed :)

i use AOL to get online when i'm at home, and i just recently found that i can still post on the forums if i access them through a site such as Safeweb.com ( i guess since safeweb blocks the IP adress, there is no way of knowing that you are on aol?)

however most of the time i'm at school and dont have to use aol (thank god becuase i hate it)
and also, AOL members have to pay to use aol, so i cant imagine that being a source of trolls. I could see Hotmail adresses and stuff like that being banned becuase they are free and people can just make up a thousand of them to use.

Report an AOL user for trolling and AOL will send an automated reply and do nothing. They could, then, make unlimited AT accounts and go nuts.

Which they did.

Read my sig :)
Actually, I get AOL free from work, and I have no problem using it for TCPIP. The only thing that doesn't work is AT. Just minimize the window and open IE. I see no reason to pay for other ISP. It might be a little better, but not that much better to justify paying for it.
I see how a bunch of geeks here might look down on AOL, and if I had $25 and a choice of ISP, it probably wouldn't be AOL, but hell will freeze before I let Anandtech tell me what ISP I need to use.

AOL is not banned because of a bunch of sycophantic and obnoxious broadband users who are trying to establish their superiority. It is banned because AOL users were constantly setting up AT accounts and trolling and trollling and trolling and trolling. Complaining to AOL does nothing. At the risk of AT going the way of Usenet, they decided it would be better to ban AOL users than lose the forums just because AOL is too lazy to do something about problem users.

The problem here is not AOL users and not Anandtech. The problem is AOL.
