"unable to map ROM"

A friend of mine who owns a Compaq computer is getting the error msg saying something similar to "unable to map ROM". Can anyone verify for me that this would mean that her motherboard is "dying", and she will either need to replace the motherboard or buy/build another computer? I do not have the specifics as to which compaq she has, but I think that's insignificant with this problem.
Any comments would be appreicated.
thanks..

Have never heard of that before, but you might try a cmos battery to see if that is the problem. The only other thing I can think of is some of her memory might be going bad. 🙁

Wish I could help more.

Will

P.S. make sure she isn't overclocking.

Thanks for the reply posting on this. I hadn't heard of it either, but since I knew ROM was on MB, then my thought was it was dying. I hadn't thought of the battery as a possibility, but it's certainly a cheap enough thing to try in the system of elimination. I'll email her to have her try that before she puts out a lot of $$ on a new MB or new system. She isn't overclocking, but I understand your thinking of that. Thanks a million for your suggestions. 🙂
