I'm running XP pro with a wireless network. The connection was working fine and stopped in midstride. It just went dead while I was online. My network connection shows connected with good signal strenth.

I have the AOL Active Virus Shield and I was notified of a Trojan that it was having some sort of trouble with the other day. Yesterday my email history in my inbox mostly disappeared but everything else was OK. Now I am unable to get onto the internet. My other programs and info seem to be unaffected. Anyone have any ideas besides starting over? Thanks

What Trojan was it? To find out, double-click your Active Virus Shield Icon and then click on the "All threats have been neutralized" or "Threats have been detected," as the case may be. A new panel will open. Copy & paste the info here. edit: with no Internet connection, I guess that would be difficult  Copy & paste it into a text file and put that on a USB drive, perhaps. At least give the precise name of the Trojan.

Also, what service pack is your WinXP (e.g. Service Pack 2 or whatever).

I have XP SP2 with all the updates.

Under detected, three deleted Trojans.
Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Tibs.jy
Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen(modification)
Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen (modification)

Under Events it is telling me that black.lst is missing or corrupted. Run Updater(which I can't)

Also I have two recent Red Exclamation Points under Events.
These are:
1/30/2007 detected new variant of Trojan Program Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen
2/01/2007 same as above

Thanks

Ok cool. On the affected system, did it find those Trojans in your email archives? Because that's the type of Trojans they are, they arrive in email attachments. That could explain where your emails went.

Here are three things to try:

1) try a wired network connection instead of wireless. If that works, maybe you have an un-virus-related problem instead (or in addition)

2) if that doesn't work, try resetting your Winsock2 by clicking Start > Run and running the command netsh winsock reset Microsoft info on this

3) You can run a manual McAfee command-line virus scanner that doesn't need to be installed. John has instructions on it on this page about halfway down. You can transfer over the necessary Zip file and the RUNSCAN.bat file on a CD or USB drive, get set up, then restart the system in Safe Mode With Command Prompt and run the scan.

Hope some of that is useful :)

Good idea about using a network cable. My computer is quite aways from the wireless router but luckily I had my 100' network cable. Plugged it in and connection is working again. Does this change what I should do next to fix the problem, or should I go to steps 2 and 3?

Maybe the wireless adapter simply lost its IP lease. Try disabling and enabling it in Device Manager, perhaps? Also, check your router to make sure it didn't get tampered with by someone within wireless range. Are you using encryption on your wireless? If not, it would be good to set up encryption.

My laptop works fine over the same wireless router.

I checked in device manager and I had an exclamation point next to ethernet controller and when I checked it said there was no driver installed. I then looked at my wireless PCI adapter and disabled it(In device manager). Next I reenabled and I got the blue screen. Rebooted the computer and got about 20 messages about your computer has recovered from a serious error etc. and I clicked through all these. I reinstalled the ethernet adapter driver and the exclamation point went away but still no internet without being wired. My wireless connection still says connected.

I may try unplugging my wireless PCI and reseating as maybe it is hardware. I think I've probably got some fairly serious corruption.

My connection is working again. I don't really know what happened or even the one thing that made it start working again.

i removed the wireless PCI adapter and plugged in a wireless USB adapter to see if it would work. It wouldn't but I could connect to my router setup. I then basically rebooted my modem and router and then the wireless USB was working. Next I put the PCI card back in and unplugged the USB and all is well. Hope it stays this way for a while.
