Unable to install Vista SP1 on my mom's laptop - Error 800f081f

I've tried every suggestion short of reformatting that I can find but no luck so far. Any ideas what's going on here?

Tried a clean boot, safe mode install, no luck

Tried everything listed here; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366 without luck.

Any idea?

More than likely there's a hidden partition on the drive (where the laptop manufacturer's "put it back to original" data is stored) that the install program can't deal with.

A reformat, and never going back, is the option.

Are you sure you have all the drivers you'll need for Vista?

There's no half way here................
Don't forget to backup all her data.
Moms can get really ugly when their data's all gone.

SP1

After running the Readiness Tool, restarting, then trying to install SP1 again, she now gets a new error: 8007000D

Hmmm.

No luck. Disabling features in the bios didn't work, running the system readiness tool didn't work, deleting the software distribution folder and updating WSUS didn't work. I'm back to getting the 800f081f error again. Short of a reformat killing the recovery partition, what else can I do to get this on there? This sucks 😕

Have you installed any other updates? What happens if you just leave the automatic updates to do its thing? I've had WU errors before that go away on their own. It seems like letting the OS do its thing for a while and trying later seems to work. I had WU errors and just said "screw it" and started installing apps and configuring the machine. A few minutes later, I got a notice that updates were available, let it download and install, reboot, and a little while later SP1 appeared.

Same error with Windows Update Auto Update - 800F081F
