unable to get a network connection

So my desktop at home is unable to get a network connection. I have tried to uninstall/reinstall the NIC, but it still will not take me to the internet.

I have a DFI LANPARTY 250GB MOBO integrated NIC. I have downloaded drivers from 3 different location, the MOBO/NIC drivers both, and it still will not let me get onto the internet. I do not have my windows firewall enabled, I disabled it in case that was the problem. I do not have a firewall placed on there yet because I just formatted the computer. When I plug-in the network cable it does see that its connected, but I do not get an IP address. I have checked my internet options and everything is set properly.

I have Comcast Cable Internet, my laptop works fine, my desktop does not...any ideas?

so when you connect the ethernet cable, windows shows that network icon in your systray and shows as connected? No little triangle with the "!" in it?

Are you using a router? Is this directly connected to your modem?

If you're using a router, does it seem like your local network is working, but just no the internet? or is the local network not even working?

If your behind a router what IP are you assigned?

no router directly into the modem...there is no error showing it shows that its connected without a problem

I couldn't tell from your OP. Does your laptop work plugged into the modem?

Check your computer for automatic IP and DNS. Network connections, adapters, your adapter, properties, IPv4, properties. Set to auto if not already there.

I have used a winsock fix numerous times for odd connections issues. The second link is the one I have used in the past.

Perhaps you could post your ipconfig information here, it might give an idea of what is going wrong. However if you are not behind a router I'd understand not wanting to do that.

I say this because maybe you have an APIPA address due to some dhcp problem or something similar.
