unable to FTP-help!

I am unable to connect to sites under any port that isn't 21. I use winxp (though this happened with 2k) and I have a netgear 314 router. I use flashfxp 1.4. On my friend site, I log in all the way (meaning i receive confirmation that my login and pw are correct and I get welcome note) and then i get this error:

200 Port command successful.
LIST
150 Opening data connection for directory list.
425 Cannot open data connection (10060).
QUIT

I tried with passive off and on. I also tried with wsftp le and I got this error:

150 opening data connection for directory list.
!timer cancelled blocking call
!accept error: blocking call cancelled
!retrieve of folder listing failed(0)

I've had this issue for a while and it's just a major pain.

Does your friend have a firewall in front of the FTP server?..is so are the ports on that forwarded correctly?

have you gone into your router and assigned the ports for specific use? also, try forwarding all the ports to the
ip assigned your computer, and turn off firewalls like zone alarm.

good luck

I've tried pasv on and off... doesn't do anything. What is strange is that I login almost all the way (I get the welcome msg) but at the end I get that message:

200 Port command successful.
LIST
150 Opening data connection for directory list.
425 Cannot open data connection (10060).
QUIT

I tried with smartftp and this is the error i got:

257 "/" is current directory.
TYPE A
200 Type set to A.
PASV
227 Entering Passive Mode (XXX,XXX,XX,XX,XX,XXX).
Opening data connection IP: XXX.XX.XX.XX PORT: 6007.
No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

what's odd is that I turned off pasv and it did that anyways. I connected on port 666 but it says port:6007 up there. not sure what that means. I still got the welcome message and my login and pw were accepted.

OK I'm going to make some assumptions since you didn't really say what your and your friends setups are. I assume you are using a broadband connection with some brand of router. I assume your friend is also doing the same. If these are not correct, then what I put doesn't really matter. I had a small problem running a FTP server and found that all my ports on my router were forwarded correctly, but I had the same problem as you when I tried to connect from a broadband connection. Dial-up connections went right through, but not users with DSL or Cable connections. I finally found out it was Zonealarm that was blocking the requests and that by setting my security setting to medium, FTP requests were able to be sent through. You might want to ask you friend if he has ZA running and if is security settings are set to high. That's about the best I can do for you. Hope it helps,

G

OK I'm stupid and didn't read your post very well. I see you are using the netgear router. I think this may be the problem. You may also want to post this at DSLreports.com. They have fourms just for users of your router.
