unable to detect system disk when on ATA100 channel

Hi everyone. I have a system that's using the Asus A7V266-E motherboard it can detect the drive (Western Digital 60GB) fine when it's on the Primary IDE channel, but when I switch it over, Windows will not load. I can put a Windows98 CD in there, and then I can get into Windows using the Boot from Hard Drive option.

Specs:
Athlon XP 1800+
512MB DDR RAM
WD 60GB HD
Asus a7v266-e
Windows 98
latest 4-in-1 drivers.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any input. 🙂

well, you can't just switch where it's plugged in...windows will get confused

i'd probably suggest that you should plug it into the ata100 channel, then boot off the cd and re-install windows over itself

that should correct the confusion

not sure if there's an easier way...

Oh yea, I just remembered what I did. I did have it attached to the ATA100 channel when I was installing it. Can I try plugging it into the Secondary ATA100 channel and seeing if that works?

well, i'm pretty sure you can't boot off a secondary channel....so i doubt that would help

it definitely sounds like your bootsector is confused and you're most likely gonna have to re-install windows over itself. you won't lose any data, though, as long as you choose not to format, which is good

<< Thanks sohcrates, but a no go. I'll just leave it at ATA66. >>

hmm...that's strange

lemme think about it overnight, and maybe someone else will also come in here and be able to help you out

though, the truth is that i would be shocked if you noticed a difference between ata66 and ata100!

Hey ojai00,

I have the same MB. Of course , like you I played with the boot device ie: the hard drive. I probably switched it around 10 times. The had to reformat, go figure.

1st: figure out where you want your hard drive and leave it there.

2nd: if you are booting off the promise controller, set up the bios that way. SCSI boot. look around in the bios for a setting to boot SCSI 1st or promise ultra ATA100. Set to promise/ultra ATA. That setting is in a sub-menu somewhere, not sure.

3rd don't set any ide to disable, just leave them on auto. This is incase you want to seperate a CDRW and a CD player to 2 different channels, plus have your hard drive on another,3rd, channel.

Also here is a good site for troubleshooting/tips on all A7V motherboards
A7VTroubleshooting

Hope I helped in some way.

Personally I have my hard drive on IDE0, CD player on IDE1, and CDRW on the Promise primary.

what do you mean leave it at ata66???

the all 4 channels on the a7v266-e are ata100 (that included the 2 via southbridge channels and the 2 onboard promise channels)

Thanks for your reply boonesmi. I meant leave it on the Primary IDE controller. I assumed that it would be ATA66 because on the UltraBIOs detection, it does not list any drive when left on that controller. When I switch it over to the ATA100 controller, then the motherboard will detect it.
