unable to connect to logical disk manager service

just set up a new box a couple of days ago, and so far so good - kind of...

after all the burnin tests etc, added extra hd's etc. was able to assingn letters, add partitions and do everything else that you typically do through the "disk management" console in computer management.

spent the last day installing all the software, plus updates etc.

today tried to repartition one of the drives, and the console would error out. could not connect to service.

checked manually to make sure that both logical disk manager services were running, shut off firewall, turned off all non-essential services. still can't connect.

no problem connecting in safe mode...

not sure what this means. build is stable and was primed for 24 hours, plus 12h of memtest before any software was installed. xp is fully updated, and all drivers etc seem to be working ok.

it seems that something is knocking out this service, and since i swap drives in and out a lot i need to be able to use it out of safe mode.

since i'm still early in the process of setting this thing up, scrapping windows and starting from scratch is not the biggest of deals, but it's one i would prefer to avoid.

has anyone ran into this before? any quick fixes?

IF you formatted the drive into multiple partitions and you don't want all drives restored back then you could disable system restore for all but your main drive and do a system restore. Of course unless you have a restore point that was after all your software install but before this problem started happening you'll have to reinstall everything again.
